YouTube for EDU - how to share schools playlist?

Not that I can see

Still not convinced because it doesnt work in my other school either and I know that I followed the instructions - in fact I had someone else with me at my other school and we sorted it together.

So - given that I have logged on with my only account, created a channel and a playlist as you can see - what do I now do to enable the school to see that playlist? Maybe I am doing the wrong thing?

The redirect to youtube for edu works fine, and looks like this

You shouldn't need to "enable" anything. Requests made under the proxy should have the header sent along with them so YouTube knows who you are and how to handle the request.

Thats what confuses me, unless Smoothwall are doing some fancy trickery I did the header modification method and the school code does't appear in the web browser address bar at any point. From my understanding that is the URL re-write method, that should work regardless.

 

Perhaps thats not setup correctly at SWGfL

Please modify your hardware filter or proxy server settings so that all outgoing traffic to youtube.com contains the following customised HTTP header. The ID to use in the HTTP header configuration, written below, is unique to your school's network only. If your school is blocked at the district level, this HTTP header is then unique to the district network.

Option B: Create URL parameter rewrite rule
If your firewall or filter does not support HTTP header modification, please rewrite all outgoing URLs to youtube.com by appending the parameter “edufilter” at the end.

Example:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gM95HHI4gLk&edufilter=YOURCODEHERE
Exclude the &edufilter parameter from these file types: .css, .gif, .png, .js, .xml

I did try and answer but that link doesn't take me anywhere with any information on it?

 

If I go to youtube I get redirected to the front page of youtube for education and SWGfL have confirmed that this means that I have set up the header correctly.

How would you get to the playlist from there? I don't want it going directly to the playlist as the teachers will need to access youtube for edu for other clips. Can someone explain this? Should I be able to see the playlist on the front page of youtube for edu?

I am beyond confused now. Can't sleep for worry over this as I am sure it is my stupid mistake but I just can't see it

I followed the instructions on how to create the account to the letter and passed on the details to SWGfL

Ok, the fact that it is sending you to that page, without an option to "go to your account" means that the account you are using is not the one set up for youtube for schools.

 

You have a choice: Figure out the account that was used to sign up, or follow the sign up instructions again, and replace the youtube for schools string on the SWGfL filtering system. I'd recommend the latter.

SWGfL doesn't use header changing, it uses the option B - the URL parameter one.

Hmm

I really can't see how that can be. I have my original notes in front of me - I printed out the instructions and ticked them off, writing things in as I went. And there is the account written down

 

Please can someone explain the youtube for edu and playlist thing though?

I know someone said they had a shortcut to the playlist - is there another way then?

Terminology miss use I guess, Witch mentioned "header modification" when its now apparent its the "url re-write"

 

Looks like someone will be starting again.

 

The playlist won't appear on the main youtube edu page and the ONLY ways to view the playlist is to view the channel page or the playlist via a shortcut/url directly.

Once you have an account which allows you to go to the 'account_school', you can simply share a playlist from within that account. We do exactly that here.

 

The only reason I can see that it isn't working is that the account that has the playlist in it isn't the one which that was used to set up Youtube for Schools.

I was told to do a shortcut separately as @Gaz says.

SWGfL have told me it IS a header modification and it is all fine.

I mean you simply make a shortcut to the playlist that you've made in that account.

 

SWGfL are mixing up terms - they are using URL modification (ie. adding &edufilter=gibberish) to the URL. If it was header modification, the end user wouldn't see that at all - it is completely hidden behind the scenes.

 

I think what you need to do is go through signing up to Youtube for schools via the link YouTube für Schulen - YouTube and then replace the youtube string in SWGfL filtering with the one you get from this sign up. Then try sharing a playlist.

This gets worse

I signed out and went back to that page and started all over again, filling in email and school details etc. When I clicked "sign up" at the bottom it took me to the account I already know about. It won't let me use my email as it says I already have a google account.

This HAS to be the one I was using as I don't have any other email addresses. So it must be right, surely?

I now get the page with "manage my account" . If I click on that I am back to the list of channels, I choose the one with the head and not the blue boxes. Create a new channel, create a playlist. Copy the URL. It doesn't work.

You shouldn't sign out of the account you've already got. Stay signed in, then go to the sign up page for Youtube for Schools. You don't need a new Google/Youtube account.

 

The fact you cannot get to the /account_school page proves that the account is not the youtube for schools admin account.

And as I said, I tried to create a new account and it will not let me because the email address is already used and I have no other email address so I cannot see how any other account can be the admin account. I have no private google account of any kind, and never have had.

What do you mean create an account? You're not creating an account - you're signing the existing account up to Youtube for Schools.
