YouTube for EDU - how to share schools playlist?

Can I suggest that you do a complete do over on this. I.e. make a new youtube account (it doesn't need to be related to the school, this is purely for testing purposes) and get a new header code.

 

It sounds like your ISP is doing it via the URL rewrite method if the school identifier is in the URL. Theres no reason that shouldn't work but I've never tried it that way, as we have Smoothwall we use the header modification method which hides the school identifier from appearing.

 

The issue appears to be with the way users access the videos. I'll setup another test account myself tomorrow and go through it again that way I'll be in a better position to help.

I can't do it again at school as SWGfL have done what they had to do and it is supposed to be the header modification - works fine redirecting Youtube to YouTube for Education - no complaints there.

I don't really understand what you mean by doing an unrelated one and getting a header code because unless my ISP did its thing I wouldnt be able to see it at school, would I?

I have the strong conviction that it is something stupid I am doing. I just can't see it. It is really really getting me down

Its like YouTube isn't detecting your school code though. It allows you to view the playlist but when the video plays it doesn't play because it can't detect whether you are allowed to view the content.

 

The reason I suggest that they are employing the URL rewrite is because YouTube say the following.

Option B: Create URL parameter rewrite rule
If your firewall or filter does not support HTTP header modification, please rewrite all outgoing URLs to youtube.com by appending the parameter “edufilter” at the end.

Example:

http://youtube.com/?edufilter=SCHOOLCODEHERE
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gM95HHI4gLk&edufilter=SCHOOLCODEHERE

 

I would say that its not the header modification because of the school code appearing in the URL. That said both methods should work regardless.

Sorry I thought it was an option that could easily be changed. I guess I forget sometimes that some schools are fortunate enough to manage their own systems.

OK I've just started this from scratch. Here is what I did.

 

1. Create gmail (google) account)

2. Sign up for youtube for schools youtube.com/schools

3. Create a YouTube Channel on the same account and give it a name.

4. Create a playlist on that channel and add a video.

5. With the school code create a header modification policy

Notes:

I created 2 channels. When asked to make a youtube channel and give it a name I first selected to created the channel name via the “Business or other name method” This doesn't appear to be working via YouTube Edu and doesn't let me view my channel via a user under the header modification. This account also appears as a second account.

 

I then created a second channel this time by just the “name the account” method. It asks for a first name and a last name but in reality you can enter anything. This is the same account that manages the school (youtube.com/account_school). With this account a user under the header modification can view the channel and playlists.

 

 

The account with the "Tick" is the account that works.

Interestingly, the playlist is the same in every case so it doesnt matter which account you sign in as

Yes, I have signed up for youtube for schools, got the reference code and I have the header which means that all users on the standard proxy are now redirected to Youtube for Education - that's fine

 

No, not quite

I have created a playlist under youtube for schools and added videos to it - which I can only do at home or here when using staff proxy which unblocks YouTube.

I can do a shortcut to the playlist which opens fine and would therefore indicate that the "school code" is being picked up OK, the videos are there but when you click on them I get the message about them not being able to be viewed under the youtube for education restrictions.

Ok, I'm still not entirely clear here - you say you 'created a playlist under youtube for schools'. Do you mean you have logged in somewhere (either via the staff proxy, or offsite) using the same account you used to sign up for youtube for schools and created the playlist in that account?

Yes - I went to youtube/schools, logged in there with the account I created at the beginning

OK. In that case, this is definitely an issue outside of your control. That is the exact process I used (and use).

 

However, knowing where to go now with it is somewhat difficult. There is a Google Group where you can post, but response times are slow and they aren't very helpful (Google themselves rarely answer). Does anyone have a contact number for someone at Youtube?

If you want to rule out your ISP you could try it out yourself at home. Ask smoothwall nicely for a trial, set it up on an old PC and give it a go.

I've just come back to this at my other school - and strangely, at this school the playlists are all different. I cannot add anything to any of them - the "add video" button doesn't work although I can do it directly from the clip itself. BUT the shortcut that I put on the desktop that appeared to work before the Easter holidays (I didnt say anything as I didnt believe it would last, and guess what??) doesn't work now at all.

Of course I have a teacher asking to add a clip, too

I know everyone has done their best to help but I could really do with some more if anyone has any ideas.

I log on to the staff proxy - so I can see youtube

I sign in

It presents me with a list of accounts - I have five now

I choose one

Click on the blue square thingy top right and then I can see three boxes: "watch later" "likes" and "school clips" (or whatever I have called it in this instance.)

I click on "school clips" and there they are. The URL now reads youtube.com/playlist?list= etc etc

Am I right in thinking that this is the one I should be using as a shortcut for the staff?

Because if I am it doesn't work.

If I switch account then the URL for the playlist is different.

I don't understand why - I am logged on as the same user and have just switched accounts within that login if you see what I mean. Why would the playlist address be different and which one should I use?

They all bring up "website not available" anyway.

I have checked with SWGfL and whatever they had to do has been done

I'm assuming "School Clips" is the playlist you've created? If so, that is correct.

 

You say you have 5 accounts - the main thing is that you have to ensure the account you're using is the same one you used to get the schools filter ID (the gibberish string of numbers/letters you entered into SWGfL filtering, the one at the bottom of this page - https://www.youtube.com/account_school).

 

You'll only have one "master" account - the one I just mentioned. This one is allowed to create playlists etc...

 

The other accounts won't be relevant any more, so you should either delete them or ignore them.

When you created youtube for schools, you had to enter a code like "Xbgsfsdg-r45dsdfdbnfds" into the SWGfL filtering system.

 

That page I linked, when logged in to that account, will list that code at the bottom, along with instructions on where to use it.

The Account you want to log into when it asks you is the same one that lets you also access youtube.com/account_school Think of it as the administrator account that lets you do everything.

Yes, as I thought. I only have one admin account but several channels, all of which have playlists, and all of which cannot be accessed no matter what I do.

However, after I have logged on I am presented with a list of said channel (square blue icon) and the original account (head icon)

If I click on the latter the only option is to create a new channel, I cannot see any channels or playlists already created

When you're logged in to that account, if you click on the blue icon in the top right, can you click "Youtube settings"? If you can, does it have "Disconnect Google+ profile, and use your Youtube username" listed? (It should).

We had far too many problems setting this up when we first looked into this back in December.

 

The solution we ended up doing is just manually putting in exceptions in smoothwall for the various youtube URLs that we want people to be able to access in school. It's not the nicest solution, but we found it to be one of the only ones that consistently work for us.
