Microsoft Volume Licensing - who?

@timbo: Are purchasing these licences outright or are you leasing them??

 

We lease ours under a schools agreement and last year paid £8k for coverage of 450 desktops / laptops (XP, Office 2003), 8 Windows Servers (2003 R2), SQL Server, Exchange Server, and CALS to access these along with TS CALS (150).

 

We have over 600 desktops in total but the others are covered under OEM licences.

 

From what I've been told by our suppliers and confirmed by a Microsoft Rep, you are not licensing correctly. To use a schools agreement, you have to buy licenses for all desktops that are used in the school. All your desktops must be licensed by OEM as the schools agreement requires a valid windows license of some form for each machine before it can be used on machines.

Ok, but how are the other ones covered? The schools agreement is supposed to be used to cover all clients, not a pick and choose.

You have to license every qualifying machine on site. This includes Macs and virtually anything else above a 386 weather it runs windows or not. That is why I tend to remove very old, stand alone machines.

You stated that you have 600 machines, of which 450 are covered by the Schools agreement. This isn't allowed - they have to all be covered by the schools agreement. What are the other 150 machines?

Pugh for us. We used to use Ramsys but our account manager DRASTICALLY underlicensed us and he really did screw everything up (one year he told MS we own 25 SMS servers when we dont have 1) so we left and went to pugh. Never had a issue since, they all seem to know their stuff there.
