penfold Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I know there are lots of threads on here about phones but with the amount of new phones coming out I've created a new thread for up to date responses. I'm currently thinking of getting my wife a new phone for Christmas but as I cant afford to spend more than £100 really. She currently has a Samsung Galaxy Ace but has complained it is slow for a while now. She is currently on contract so I was thinking of getting a PAYG phone to replace it with. She's on Vodafone and I've been looking at phones on offer but there doesn't seem to be many that will offer enough of an improvement for £100. The only one's I've noticed are a Huawei Ascend G 510 and the Nokia Lumia 520. She does play some games on her phone, but mainly it is used for calls, text and some web apps FB, eBay,HotUKDeals etc. I'm kind of leaning towards the Nokia to be honest, but not sure of the performance and don't want to waste my money. If I can't get anything decent for the money I'd rather save it and spend it on a something else entirely. Has anyone get any experiences of these phones or can offer a different opinion at all?
chazzy2501 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) The Moto G has an amazing write up and can be got for £129 at Tesco. Moto G 16GB is only £129 from Tesco, but get a move on | CNET UK EDIT: The 8GB one you can get for £99 but I've only seen it for £119. on Phones4U Edited December 19, 2013 by chazzy2501 2
TwoZeroAlpha Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 My wife just picked up a MotoG from O2 for £129, she's very please with it. Nice screen, good level of features. Swappable backs was a real bonus for her to find (little things). Bit feature light compared to anything I would want, but at that price I don't think you can beat it. 1
dezt Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Someone at work just got the MotoG from Tesco, he used clubcard vouchers on it and got the 16Gb one for £99. He loves it, looks like a good phone. 1
penfold Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 Looks like the MotoG is probably the best value then. I'll need to get it unlocked but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. It will be a last minute thing as she keeps changing her mind about what she want...Thanks all
Oaktech Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 My Missus is about to go end of contract January 16th and wants something to replace her ageing HTC, I've suggested the Moto G, but her only reservation is it's size, her HTC is made for her delicate petite lady hands, and the Moto G is a bit on the big side (she hates my Huawei Ascend; she can't answer it one handed as she can't flick far enough across the screen!) I've had Motorola phones for ages 2x Defy and a Razr and reall. I only got the Huawei as no one would sell me a Razr HD at the time I wanted it!
penfold Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 @Oaktech - I have the same phone as you and my wife has the same thinking about it's size. Hmm maybe I'd be better letting her chose, I know she like picking things based on colour rather than function:rolleyes:

sonofsanta Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Well Ars declared the Moto G the only phone worth buying at that price point: Review: Google’s $179 Moto G puts every single cheap Android phone to shame Smaller phones, though, I don't know. I wish Android manufacturers would stop thinking that the size of the screen is inexorably tied to the spec of the internal components and release a decent 4.3" phone with better-than-2010 innards. 1
burnsyb0y Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 I have a Lumia 520 and i could not be happier with it, fastest pone i have ever owned and feels and looks lovely if you ask me. I also love the simplicity of the OS, i hate win8/8.1 with a passion but love it on a phone. 1

Jobos Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) I too have the Lumia 520 and I'm very happy with it. Got it through Talkmobile £7 a month deal in October and came with 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 250MB which I see has now been replaced with a £8.50 deal with increased data to 500MB. Lots of bad reviews about Talkmobile level of service but I've found them ok myself and after taking off what the phone would of cost I'm not paying a lot for the calls. 250MB of data is not a much but I use wifi most of the day so last month I only use 4MB of data so this package is right for me.
