running external conduit

every time I speak to a builder about drilling though my floor to run cables they always ask me if there are services there, well I don't know I say, Your the builder, otherwise i'd do it myself!.

 

I've now reached the stage where I don't think i'm going to persuade any of them to do the job, so I phoned an Aerial chap who suggested using the pvc fittings from a washing machine vent.

 

Any suggestions anyone? or does anyone know of a diy kit I could fit myself?

Not clear I'm afraid. Is he suggesting going out the wall and back in? Might indeed be easier than through a concrete floor that will have re-bar in it, and possibly services too!

If it's a concrete floor you may also be breaking a fire break - which might need approval from building control.

"Your" floor as in your house, or somewhere at work / school? What sort of floor - concrete? You can get detectors for electrical cabling and/or pipes - good ones might be expensive to buy, but you should be able to rent them by the day from HSS Hire or similar. You can buy plastic cable conduit from Homebase, although by the sounds of it some plastic pipe might be the kind of thing you're aiming for. The only problem I can think of with washing machine vent material is that the ridges might snag a cable as you try to push it through.

Just drill through the wall and do it that way, with a long enough drill bit. I have installed aerials many many times. Drop your fly lead from your aerial down to where ever you want it and drill through. Tidy it up by clipping it, I usually use drill clips, then push the cable through the wall and connect up.

He hasn't said what he's running just that he asked an aerial fitter so you've assumed coax.
