Backup Software

Morning all,

 

Just a quick question really. I am currently using Brightstar Arcserve Backup to backup the three most important of our 10 servers.

 

Having had a significant amount of work done over the summer, including the installation of Exchange 2003 for student use, I would like to take the oppurtunity of changing our backup software. This is also partly because I don't have complete faith that it's doing what I need it to.

 

I'm looking, therefore, for a new piece of backup software which will allow me to backup PDC, file server, print server, Sims and additional DC. But will also allow me to backup two exchange servers.

Backup Exec with remote agents including SQL and Exchange. Nice, simple and only had it fail twice in the various versions used over the last 6 years.

Have a look at Novabackup from Novastor. This is easy to use and has good support for devices etc and it is cost effective. I have just used it for backing up one server and it is good.

I have heard good things about other techies using Novabackup in similar envirinment to yours.

 

I have tried using backupexec and Brightstor Arcserve and they always seem to be more complicated to use and therefore when it came to restoring in a DR situation I did not feel confident. I guess it is also to do with fully understanding the products but as training budget was non existent we were left with figuring this out ourselves and no one felt confident.

Novabackup on the other hand was very intuitive.

I'm using BackupAssist as front to NTbackup.

 

SQL, Exchange & open file add-ons.

 

Cheap and Simple - Great product.

Backup exec, although I find it's really fussy with Exchange, keeps reporting corrupted messages from time-to-time, the only solution is for the user to delete the message. Unfortunitely when it does report a corrupted message, it records an overall fail for the backup, although everything else bar the corrupted message is backed up fine.

Yeah - it does that a lot especialy with the remote agent. If a server has been pulled offline for some reason and I forget to tell it to not back it up it shows the job as failed even though all other servers are backed up fine.
