UPS and redundancy PSU

Hi All,

 

Just wondered how everyone has their UPS linked up to their servers. Currently we have both the PSU's in each server linked across the UPS's however i dont believe this is the best way of doing it as if there is a mains power outage the main purpose of the UPS's are to give enough time for System Admins to powerdown the servers correctly (aside obviously from spike protections etc etc) so in my mind it is pointless in a way of having both PSU's linked to across the UPS's

We have 2 UPSs, and each server plugs into both. Those UPSs are on individual breakers, so each circuit can be taken offline without servers going down.

My setup is very similar, 2 UPSs, with 1 power supply plugged into each for every server. I don't have individual breakers for the UPSs, but have just requested it from facilities when the building is rewired next year!

Yes same here, 2 UPS, one per power supply on each server, and each UPS is on a different phase on our 3 phase power, so if a phase goes down across the whole school (has happened in the past due to blowing a 200 amp fuse!) the server cab should stay up.

Yeah, ideally they'd be on different phases here too, but to do so would cost us a fortune having to run new cables across the entire school and fiddling around with asbestos filled lofts.

We upgraded one of our UPSs recently, so when I get a chance, I will split the servers across the two. The UPS is, as you know, there to protect against power outages and spikes, but it is of course a point of failure, and if the UPS dies, so do your servers.
