Connecting to the network ok but not to the internet?

I thought it was about time to get to grips with Vista. We have taken delivery of some laptops that have windows vista business on them. I have managed to get the lap[tops connected to and logging onto the network BUT the network and sharing centre say that the laptop is connected to the network but there is a red cross from the network to the internet??

 

 

As I am new to Vista io have assumed that you set up the network connection the same as i have been with the XP Pro OS?

 

 

Can any onre start to point me in the right direction to be able to get the laptop past just the network connection and onto the internet.

It should automatically pickup the DCHP settings and connect right away.

The laptop is getting an IP number from the DHCP, and I can navigate round the schools network, BUT it will not let me go any further than the network???

 

I don't know if I have touched a setting on the laptop and this is blocking me from going throuigh the county firewall?? or something similar?

 

To summerise I can log on to the network and it is being given an IP address by the DHCP server but I still cannot seem to go any further than the schools network?

Proxy settings is what kills me every time with this.

Have you gone into the network and sharing cetnre in the control panel and turned on the relevant requirements ? File Sharing, Network Discovery etc...?

I had the same issue - proxy server wasn't configured! 8O

How do you configure the proxy server for Windows Vista. Is there different settings for XP Pro and vista?

Same way as in IE6!

 

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Proxy Settings

Proxy settings are allmost certainly the killer. IE stores them, took me 2 days to get a friends PC on the internet on there network with Vista's proxy stuff.

I had this same problem at home. I googled the problem and found it's a bug in Vista, the SP1 release will fix this but in the short term there is an un-offically released patch/es called the Windows Performance and Stability update.

 

Give this a try, it fixed both my laptop and my desktop of the problem.

Do you have the linWindows Performance and Stability update software? I did a google search but could not find it.
