rickjames Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I'm a complete idiot here and parts of it make sense whilst some don't; just what on Earth are people spending these things on?
jinnantonnixx Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) I'm a complete idiot here and parts of it make sense whilst some don't; just what on Earth are people spending these things on? They're buying Litecoins. I crack me up. Joking aside, it's more of a speculation instrument than a currency. They seem particularly volatile at the moment. Edited December 6, 2013 by jinnantonnixx
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I had a proposition from the upper sixth yesterday - "can we borrow the IT suites over here or the whole building to do this bitcoin thing? Just for a weekend? We'll cut you in..".. I had to chuckle.. 600 Dual/Quad/8 core systems in parallel? I salute you..heh. You wouldn't make anything. CPU mining is really inefficient, even with 600 of them you'd still not have enough hashes per second to actually mine any bitcoins. You could stick them in a mining pool and share the rewards, but even then it wouldn't cover the electricity costs from running all those machines for 48 hours. Don't mine bitcoins ever. You won't turn a profit and you're almost guaranteed to lose money. This isn't hyperbole, this is based on data from the blockchain itself.
cpjitservices Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Hmmmm wonder how many I could mine with my IBM Flex Series Blade Server, 2 CPU's at 16 cores each!! :) 384 GB Ram.
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I'm a complete idiot here and parts of it make sense whilst some don't; just what on Earth are people spending these things on? Up until recently, illegal drugs (something like 85% of all bitcoins mined ever passed through silk road before it was busted by the FBI). Now? Nothing. Well, that's not entirely true. There are a very small number of shops/pubs in the UK which accept bitcoins as payment via BitPay. This doesn't really count as "using bitcoin" though, because the shop/pub itself never actually sees any BTC. The BitPay system basically converts the bitcoins instantly into actual useable money and then sends that to the shop, minus a fee. The actual bitcoins sit in a wallet address owned by BitPay, who probably then use them to speculate in order to try and generate more revenue.
localzuk Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 You can get cars with them... Bitcoin May Be in a 'Bubble' but It Can Also Buy You a Tesla Model S - Yahoo Finance
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Hmmmm wonder how many I could mine with my IBM Flex Series Blade Server, 2 CPU's at 16 cores each!! :) 384 GB Ram. Again - probably none. According to this: TP's Bitcoin Calculator you'd mine about 0.022522 bitcoins per month, nowhere near enough to even cover the cost of the electricity. Those figures were fudged slightly based on the hash rates for the E5-2690 from here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison Don't mine bitcoins.
jinnantonnixx Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) What can I do with my Dell Vostro? How long do you have? Ideally, you should aim to crank one out before the start of the Universe's heat death, which is around 10^100 years, give or take a couple of days. Watch your overheads, though. SovietRussia Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I started doing some mining last night, made 0.000007 bitcoins
rickjames Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 How long do you have? Can leave it in the office all weekend I guess... 1
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 As per http://www.edugeek.net/forums/behind-red-door/128371-litecoin.html im looking to speculate in a few litecoins.... that being said, my first venture isnt going too well. The methods of purchasing them are a little "iffy" at best. Avoid LiqPAY at all costs.
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 As per http://www.edugeek.net/forums/behind-red-door/128371-litecoin.html im looking to speculate in a few litecoins.... that being said, my first venture isnt going too well. The methods of purchasing them are a little "iffy" at best. Avoid LiqPAY at all costs. Sell them now and invest in something regulated like stocks. This is the best advice you can get. The boat with litecoins sailed years ago, they're even more of a bubble than BTC because you literally cannot spend them anywhere and cashing out is even harder. How many did you buy, out of interest? If you want to make money on cryptocurrencies, as I said earlier in the thread, mine them just as they launch. That way you won't have lost anything, and when you inevitably don't make any money you still have a graphics card to play videogames with.
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 How many did you buy, out of interest? None! The USD deposit is being held up...glad I paid on my CC
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 None! The USD deposit is being held up...glad I paid on my CC Then it's not too late! Get out while you still can! Alternatively, invest in BBQCoins and watch your profits go up uP UP!
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 BBQCoin? An alt cryptocurrency which someone made as a joke. When he posted about it, the creator said "these coins are designed to be exchanged for fun and not traded for cash." Now people are paying actual money for them simply because they are a cryptocurrency. I was being very very sarcastic when I told you to buy them. If you want to know where this is going, look up Tulip Mania on youtube.
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 . I was being very very sarcastic when I told you to buy them. I just bought £300 worth!
pcstru Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 If you want to know where this is going, look up Tulip Mania on youtube. Although at least with Tulip bulbs, you get a pretty show in spring.
LosOjos Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I just bought £300 worth! Time to head over to various news sites and big up the BBQCoin in BitCoin comments, there's still chance you could make a profit from someone even more keen than you!
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Time to head over to various news sites and big up the BBQCoin in BitCoin comments, there's still chance you could make a profit from someone even more keen than you! lol, I didnt really! The initial $100 investment that, so far, isnt happening was just dipping my toe in the water. It seems to be FAR too difficult to get funds in to buy LTC in the first place. I can only imagine how hard it is to get it out at a profit!
LosOjos Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Although at least with Tulip bulbs, you get a pretty show in spring. I invested in some tulip bulbs; the growth was phenomenal in the second quarter but I had hardly anything left by the fourth
Sdrawkcab Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) I can only imagine how hard it is to get it out at a profit! Depending on who you talk to and where you are in the world, this ranges from "almost impossible" to "agonisingly difficult and slow". Here is a good article about how hard it is to get filthy fiat for bitcoins in Canada, the place with the Bitcoin ATM machine. Edited December 6, 2013 by Sdrawkcab 1
browolf Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 conceivably there's a cutoff point where no-one at all can afford to mine the coins anymore?
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 conceivably there's a cutoff point where no-one at all can afford to mine the coins anymore? Its a variable difficulty hash, if the rate drops, the difficulty drops to compensate
