Arthur Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Where and how? For future reference, the Verbose vs normal status messages group policy has been renamed to Display highly detailed status messages in Windows 8/8.1 and Server 2012/2012 R2 (and Windows 7 if you use the latest ADMX files). http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#1842 Computer Configuration » Administrative Templates » System » Display highly detailed status messages Edited December 11, 2013 by Arthur 1
JHLEHS Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Any joy with the above issue? this has started happening at out place too. Nearly half the computer suites either gets stuck at please wait or welcome. This started happening about a couple of weeks ago. This is an interesting one this, from my experience it could be a number of problems. What machines do you have are these RM? I have seen a few machines get stuck on windows when the sata cable on the hard drive comes slightly dislodged also a few when the hard drives have bad sectors. But recently for I had one machine that was a power problem as I swapped out the DC DCB power module and it was fine. Very frustrated with this! Do they get stuck on Windows each time or is it intermittent? My machines only get stuck on Windows from a PXE boot startup job in the morning which was interesting.
penfold Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Not sure if this has already been suggested or not, but check spanning tree on the switch. We had some new switches which had been configured for fast spanning tree and this caused a log on problem. This has been changed to standard and now the machines boot fine. I don't know the full details as it wasn't me who was looking at it but everything else we tried still resulted in the same error being reported. It was as if the machine was coming up too fast and couldn't get a network connection as a result it took an age to log on and was stuck on please wait or welcome... 1

That is possible, might be worth moving the PC to a different physical location in the school and test it?

If I remember rightly from a seminar if spanning tree is turned on for ports where PC's are attached when the PC is turned on the port starts to negotiate the tree so it can take a few seconds to sort. While this is happening the PC can not communicate so if you have a PC that boots quite fast (which most do these days) it interferes. You can test this visually by turning Spanning tree on for one port, off for another and then turning PCs attached to those ports on. The port lights will settle much quicker on the non-spanning tree port. Recommendations were to only have spanning tree on ports that connect to other switches. In case of a network storm this will not protect PCs on the same switch but will limit the storm to that one section. 1
Arthur Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) If it is a software-related issue you could use the Windows Performance Toolkit to diagnose the problem. http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2012/09/13/using-the-windows-performance-toolkit.aspx http://snag.gy/T8QZm.jpg Edited December 11, 2013 by Arthur
Novalee Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Anymore for anymore on this? Still struggling. Seems to be when illegally shutdown as suggested.

Do they get stuck on Windows each time or is it intermittent? My machines only get stuck on Windows from a PXE boot startup job in the morning which was interesting. We found that if you unplug the network cable it gets to the logon screen OK but as soon you plug it back it gets stuck. We have enabled the verbose message in GPO and that seems to suggests its getting stuck at software installation however, that only happens when you use pupils logon credentials it does not happen with administrator credentials. We have Dell PCs. Really frustrating...
timbo343 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) We had this at our place. One of my technicians found a fix on the ms site. Ive got the patch at work that i can dig out and upload for the ones who are having the problem. It certainly stopped our problem. We found before the patch the machine would fail to apply a specific group policy and the machines that were causing the problem were the dell 755. Edited December 19, 2013 by timbo343
ghafoor Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Where and how ? This can be done locally on PC or via GPO console. Enable Computer Configuration » Administrative Templates » System » Verbose vs normal status message
Arthur Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Verbose vs normal status message It's not called that anymore.
mac_shinobi Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Safe mode with networking and are the clients getting the correct dns settings and not sitting trying to communicate with a none existant dns server ? Long shot
timbo343 Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Here is the fix that sorted our Please wait issue on our machines. Windows6.1-KB2617858-x86.msu.zip
Arthur Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 FWIW, KB2617858 is already included in KB2775511 (Microsoft's Slow Boot, Slow Logon hotfix) so I would install that instead.
ghafoor Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 It's not called that anymore. If you have a look at the console on the client machine you will see it is called "Verbose vs normal status messages"
davido38 Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 It's old but i have the same problem. After summer break all computers have the problem. if it's started in Safemode with Networking and restart no more problem, no need to login just reboot. The problem I have 180 pc to boot in safe mode with networking and restart...
techy32 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 We are suffering randomly with this issue now a days...Our PCs and laptops are having the "please wait" and then "Welcome" issue..... Anyone has got any possible answer for it???? It is very annoying.....
Steve21 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Did you enable the detailed status? If so what's it failing on/or where's it sticking in the login process? We found recently printers are causing huge hassles with drivers on Win7 and re-did the way we map printers to get around it, but obviously depends what it's stuck on as to what to suggest Steve
techy32 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Yes, enable detailed logging. We fixed one pc by removing from DNS , moving out of the OU and moved back to the proper OU and it worked. We are currently having issues with laptops... They don't seem to be getting group policy and not showing any detail.
Steve21 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 What line does it get stuck on if you've enabled the detailed logging as it shouldn't say welcome etc anymore should show longer bits. Steve
techy32 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Below are the messages "wait for user profile service" "Applying user settings" "applying group policy local users and group policy"
Oaktech Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Below are the messages "wait for user profile service" "Applying user settings" "applying group policy local users and group policy" And do you specify anything in local users and groups? If you are in a domain environment it's a pretty rare occurrence to need anything much in local users and groups?
techy32 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 well, rebuilding has resolved the issue..... not ideal...
