This is going to be interesting, BT certainly have the money to go toe to toe with Sky and it's about time there was some strong competition. Hopefully it'll end badly with both companies going arse up, they deserve each other :p

Yeah an interesting time in the TV market.

Sky have *never* lost a sports rights auction and its part of their core strategy, no wonder their shares have been hit.

Apparently Sky are trying to change tack and invest more in original drama such as Dracula (which I watched the first of at a friend's house, quite good actually). However, attracting people to your channel for good quality drama is a lot harder than buying up sports events and hence a lot of fans who will move wherever the sport goes.

must remember to ditch the Sky sports channels in 2015 from virgin account.....

 

I get the BT sport channels through virgin for free so im glad as it will save me about £20 a month.

 

As said above they seem to be pushing Drama series at the moment, Dracula is good and so is Strike Back. although I have watched strike back from the first series.

I can only assume they will do anything to buy up the Premier league rights when they come up again!

 

Sky 1 has some great original drama and comedy at the minute, will be a worry to ITV and BBC if they start putting more funds into their programming.

when was the last time itv made anything worth watching apart from btcc i stuggle to think when the last time i watched any itv channel was

On a more serious note, someone really should get cracking on the fibre optic rollout, that's where TV is going, not fighting over network bids (OK sports may be the exception...). I know BT have done a massive amount of work getting fibre optic around the country, but you're still stuffed in many places if you've got more than one road between you and the nearest main road.

 

TV isn't going to continue in it's current format of scheduled listings and dodgy reception, people rely on the likes of Freeview+, Sky+ and other DVR packages a hell of a lot now. Add Netflix and Lovefilm and I don't know many people who watch TV at it's scheduled time any more. The only way I can see TV going is pure online service. A new episode of a program will be released on a certain date, other than that you just pick what you want to watch. Some BBC shows are already premièring on iPlayer before they're on "normal" TV.

 

Who here wouldn't jump on a service like that if they had a fast, reliable internet connection? I know I would!

Whitechapel is Very Good! Whoever writes it has a suitbaly sick mind and plenty of people willing to make it look great (read gruesome). I'd suggest it to anybody. The start of series 3 had me measuring the walls in my house before I dare sleep!

Looks like I will be having to get BT Sport next year so I can watch MotoGP as BBC and Eurosport have lost their coverage rights to BT as well. I can switch my BB from Sky to BT for about £5 a month more and get Sports

BT were laying fibre to the door in MK a few years ago but it was part of a trial or something, guess they are still concentrating on rolling fibre to the cabs still

I'm no expert, but as a quick google search says otherwise - some examples (An Idiot Abroad & Moaning of Life) 4 independent production companies - distributed by the BBC.

The Office and The IT Crowd and Bo Selecta - Roughcut TV - independent company - produces for BBC, ITV, et al

Stella - Tidy Productions (Ruth Jones) - BBC/Sky

 

Its good for the indies, all Sky do is buy in very well...

 

Edit - ITV have 13 production studios with LOTS of programs

I hadn't realised Eurosport had lost the rights too! Typical, I get to the point in my life where I can afford Sky Sports and now hardly anything I watch is on it! The possibility of cancelling the Sports and Sky TV is now a very real prospect for me, however this is exactly what BT want me to think so on that basis I won't!

Tunnel - Kudos Production (Owned by Shine Group (21st Century Fox - Murdoch owned)) So almost SKY made - The Tunnel remake of the Swedish/Danish crime thriller The Bridge for Sky Atlantic and French broadcaster Canal+ - Originally made content for BBC (Spooks)

 

Dracula - Carnival Films & Television - NBCUniversal (Comcast) -
