RasPi - teacher wants to give them Internet access - do you?

I know very very little about these devices, but apparently in order for the Head of IT to teach the module they want to, these devices need to be able to access the Internet!

 

I am uneasy just allowing them to plug them in to network sockets and have no idea about how to configure them with proxy access, set IP address etc.

 

We put sophos on all our Windows based devices and lock them down with group policies, do we need to do anything similar with these items?

 

All our Internet traffic is routed through a smoothwall and we also have a BYOD wireless network which could be used if that's an option.

 

Any thoughts appreciated.

You could put them on a separate VLAN which only has routing out via smoothwall (i.e. they can't touch the rest of the network). That should address the lack of endpoint protection (although the risk is small). Proxy and networking should be fairly standard linxy stuff, HTTP_PROXY environment variables or set in config files. Networking likewise, configured in /etc/network/interfaces.

It isn't as if they're going to be lurking live on the network for any great amount of time. And wiping the system to put a new build on is quite easy.

setup the SD cards yourself, don't give the users the root passwords - they should still be able to use them to program and muck about but not install any unintended software...

I know this is an old post, but setup them up wireless on a guest network. He will have internet connection just via wifi.
