  1. Thank you for your reply. It is a very big school with many classes but also with lots of custom made classes for various clubs and intervention groups. I appreciate people are saying it loads for some of you bust just takes a while but I’ve left it in the desk and it definitely crashes - perhaps just too many to load! That would make sense as admin do see all the classes. Pity class charts don’t seem to make any upgrades or improvements! Strange for such a popular application. Thanks again
  2. Yes thanks. We wanted to avoid this as it writes back to the MIS and just isn’t the ideal solution. However appreciate your reply - it would be a work around. thanks
  3. We have been having an issue with Class Charts since getting our SLT iPads last year. For the majority of staff they work very well but for a few users they were not working at all with class charts. Logging into class charts using a browser or the app causes class charts to freeze during login or at best get to the homepage but again, fully frozen. It doesn’t run slow, it just don’t run at all. When this was investigated, we quickly realised that these few staff were admin on class charts. Changing their permissions on class fixes the error and equally you can login as a none admin on those iPads without an issue. Permanently changing their role on class charts is not a solution. Has anyone else experienced this and have any work around? iPad 10 edge browser or class charts teacher app Thanks
  4. Morning all We need to be able to upload work for students to complete lesson by lesson. We have thought about using SharePoint, adding a folder for each student, each day and each period and uploading work into there. This would work and effectively what we are after, however this is very messy with someone having to constantly create daily folders and period folders, but the biggest issue is that students will be able to see everyone else work and it`ll all get very messy. We could use teams. Maybe there is a better way on teams but my only understand would be to message students with the work for each lesson but then can the staff supervising see this? Even if this is possible, it isn`t particularly well laid out as we want it day by day, lesson by lesson. If a member of staff understandably wants to be organised and send all the weeks work, it`ll all get clumped together in the chat. We need students to login to an area and see the work available for them for the day. Maybe there is an extension to teams to allow this? We just simply want work to be completed for the day. Student --> day --> period and a place to put in the task and any resources. With the student being able to see it and the supervising member of staff. Has anyone any suggestions? Any help much appreciated. Chris
  5. That can be done... ;-) However, in reflection I think I could do with seeing some examples of good practice in terms of organisation, looks and administration of a moodle VLE. Anyone within 100 miles of Manchester willing to give me a brief demo? I`d very much appreciate it!
  6. Our moodle based VLE is up to renewal and we have always struggled to get the uptake in departments and staff using it. We use Progresso by Advanced Learning and therefore we can`t link anything to it correctly from our MIS. Ultimately, we use it for 2 essential functions/features: 1. Staff landing page of IE for all useful websites and links 2. File sharing between students and teachers - i.e teachers putting up documents for download. We literally don`t use any of the other functionality, no online marking, assessment assignment, quizzes... The whole thing looks OK but staff say it is too difficult to use. It isn't the most user friendly and the way the courses and topics are layed out is quite tricky to get looking nice across department areas and the whole thing looks a little unwieldy. The principle of it works, but as I say, staff seem to find it tricky to use. Question is, what are our options. I`ve heard a lot about google classroom but we are not using the rest of the google apps so we are not willing to go down that road. Any other options or suggestions?
  7. Thanks for the information and hopefully this lifts it back to the top. I am now using the info in the link above to display Sky News live feed from YouTube, which is acceptable but not quite as desirable as the BBC news. However, if Sky News is my only option, do you know if it is possible to run with subtitles? Sky news tend to have quite a static "top stories" bar at the bottom and so the content doesn't`t really match the info in the bar. Subtitles would be great.
  8. I went into Xibo about 9 months ago when the bbc stream worked by using someones code. As soon as we bought into it (I.e hardware) the bbc stopped its link being functional in xibo! I know there is a way of streaming youtube and I could pull the live sky news link from there. Could anyone explain in detail how to do this? Thanks!
  9. We have xibo running nicely but have a huge issue in that we are restricted to 30MB. IT manager has assured me he has set the php.ini files and have increased max_size= and upload_max_filesize= to greater than 30MB. However, when you navigate to media and upload a file +30MB it uploads it all the way to the end and then immediately says "File not found"! Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are using the latest client and the latest server.
  10. Yes, I can imagine this is more obvious when it is full screen with one media type but in a split screen I`m not clear how it works.
  11. Hi guys I`m slowly getting there with Xibo now and have it setup and running with a test display over our school network. In my last message I asked about streaming live TV news and with the other thread on Anyone using Xibo, I`ve managed to stream Sky News. I`m still just massively confused by the "duration" option in each region timeline. Its obvious if you are creating a playlist in that area that the duration is how long it stays on before it moves to the next media but what happens if you only have one media piece in place? So for example, I have sky news - should that be on for the full day 86400? Or what happens if I only put that on for 200, does that mean every 200 seconds it will refresh the connection which is good just in case it goes down or whatever? Also, does the duration of each region need to total to the same value - my understanding is that if you schedule one layout after another, will it just flip when the time is set OR will it wait for all regions of the first layout to finish. I`m rambling - but I`m not clear on the duration side of things! I know Xibo hasn`t got a twitter media link directly in it and we really want a section for our twitter feed. Any links mentioning this are very old and talk about twitters old RSS feed and using that. Things seem to have changed and I still can`t get anything to work. Is anyone displaying a twitter feed - if so, how? Chris
  12. I`ve just installed Xibo and I`m attempting to use it to run the 4 displays we have around school in place of the current PowerPoint loops we have running. I`d like a custom background but creativity is not really my thing. Our school colours are black and gold and we have a school crest - I can just envisage the display windows with the school crest and name at the top in a narrow header. Are there any companies or individuals who can make a background image for us that we know will be suitable and work? I`m currently using just a black background and it looks ok! As part of the drive on SMSC, I`d like to show live BBC/Sky news for certain periods of the day, say at lunch and break and maybe more frequently on a separate screen if we set one up in the waiting room entrance. The searching I`ve done suggests I`d need a TV card on the client computer but is there no way of streaming from an online BBC feed or similar method? I`d really appreciate any help or suggestions! Cheers
  13. Warning?
  14. Hi guys, sorry to jump into the party uninvited but I am in exactly the same position and also in Lancashire - I'd be interested in joining the conversation if possible. We currently have 4 displays already linked to a pc serving each. Admin currently remotely login, boot up the PowerPoint and then logout. We are looking to improve this and the dedicated digital signage software available looks great. I've been playing with digitalsignage.net (interestingly and randomly also local in blackburn) - you can sign up andlogin to their cloud software for free and even preview your designs. Super easy to use but it's £160 a year licence per computer. That's not too bad if you run all your monitors off one pc but the displays are a long way from each other. Apparently you could get around this by using HDMIor VGI TO Ethernet boxes but this it quite a large one off expense and my understanding is that it is still a lot of wiring. Each having a dedicated pc would make life easier but increase the costs. Xibo looks good to me as well. I was sat with the IT manager for an hour trying to install it this evening with some difficulty and now he is off for a week so it'll have to wait for a week now anyway. I've been trying to install it this evening on my home pc, installed appache but for some reason couldnt hit the xibo install directory on my local web server. I'll give it another go over the next few days. I'm not the IT manager but have a decent tech understanding but I've been set the task of getting it active. Cheers
  15. We have had our moodle hosted externally for many years now but the site needs a full rebuild and a fresh start. Its a large school with 6th form and so the need for a good VLE that fits in with the school image is important. Although our external hosts did the full setup, design and updates when needed for the many years we have been with them, it seems a lot of money for the limited service when it could be managed internally. Do you know of any companies that will build, design and customise an internal hosted moodle VLE for a fixed price and then leave it with us to manage. We would of course then call up for additional work as and when it is needed. We now use lots of different services, online outlook email, MIS system, Vivo, ShowMyHomework.. etc so as well as using the VLE for the setting of tasks and functionality it has, we also would like to use it as a main navigation to the different portals with single sign in where possible. I`m interested in any information. Perhaps even examples of such VLE`s in operation or alternatives to moodle if appropriate. Of course information on anywhere that can provide such as service would be good. crayNerd
  16. Sorry for the delay in my reply. Could you provide the names of any third party providers that could integrate progresso data into the VLE for access by staff and students. Things such as progress data, report data, behaviour logs.. etc. Many thanks
  17. I don`t know.... is it optimistic of me to even think that progresso can link to moodle for anything let alone rewards? I just want students to be able to see the credits they have earned and what they have earned them for. Pulling this info from progresso to their VLE login homepage would have been the ideal way. Vivo or such a system seems like the only way....
  18. I know this is an old post, but setup them up wireless on a guest network. He will have internet connection just via wifi.
  19. Minecraft is nice, there is a lot of fun but learning to be done! We have taken a g&t group and made a weather station and linked it to twitter. Why not have 5-6 setup in a corner for research as a cheap free resource for browsing.
  20. Could anyone tell me if it is possible to link the students credit/merit awards score from progresso into Moodle? I would like students to very clearly see their credit total when they log into the VLE. At the moment, progresso does a job of recording the rewards but other than reports generated, sorted, exported and sent to form tutors, students don't know their credit score. I know there is Vivo miles and also pupilrewardpoints.co.uk that both link with progresso to display credits and also have some fantastic extra features like a shop and target badges, but this is just another portal to ask parents and student to login to. If the credit score was pulled through from progresso into moodle, this would be ideal. I would appreciate any replies and advice! Chris
