Just spoke to BG and this is what it breaks down too.

Gas:

Standard Tariff

Usage average is: 2.69 - 8.065 per KwH (Tier 1) 4.524 Per KwH (tier 2)

Calibration charge is 26.09

Electric:

Standard Tariff

2.31 Average Usage. : 21.98 Per KwH

13.27 Per KwH

New prices as of 23rd November

Gas: 5.05 per Kwh (tier1) , 26.09 Standing Charge, 26.009 (tier2)

Elec: 13.75 Per KwH, 26.09 Standing Charge, 26.009 (tier2)

IM confused by all this if im honest.

The immediate problem (in both instances) is that you're on the Standard Tariff for both electric and gas. I'm no expert and I'm not entirely sure how it works with pre-pay meters, however I've signed up for a fixed price (all the big six do it) and pay via DD.

It seems rather unfair that you may/may not be forced to be on the Standard Tariff just because you have a pre-payment meter.

You are within your right to simply ask BG, 'What's the best tariff for me?' and 'Can I get it cheaper elsewhere?' The law has changed which means they have to tell you, or point you in the right direction.

A calibration is where, the meter during 2am and 3am does some jiggery poker with the credit, re-calibrates itself so that the meter after so much has been used makes the price go down on the per KwH but no idea as to what price.

I use an Economy 7 meter, so I pay less every evening. During the day it's slightly more expensive, but generally I'm at work so it makes no difference to me.

This is all automated and I don't pay for this, so I am somewhat confused as to why you're charged a calibration fee. I wonder if it's their way of calling it an 'admin fee' seeing as you're not paying using the preferred DD.

So lets compare -

Electricity

SC per day - 34.25p 11.752p kWh You pay ave 86p SC and 21.98p kWh

Gas

SC per day - 34.25p 3.535p kWh You pay ave 86p SC and 8p kWh

So even doubling what I pay it still does not account for your high charges
