Something I've been toying with for a while now is the idea of making a poster to lay-out some tech support truisms. The basic premise would be a poster containing a list of 50 or so truths/tips about IT support that if a user reads will make them think twice and maybe get them to try and solve the more simpler tasks by themselves before calling for support to come and flick a switch.

What I would like is for you all to contribute. Please keep the item short and to the point, and we shall credit each one on the poster. if we can get this done in time we can give them away at BETT and also make them available to download on EduGeek as well.

So, as an example I have filled in the first two.

1. If your computer is misbehaving really do try switching it off and on again. It often works wonders - Dos_Box

2. Learn how your printer works - It only takes 10 seconds to free a paper jam which is better than waiting 15 minutes for us to arrive and do it for you - Dos_Box

Get this idea? OK, poster additions only please, no comments about other tips posted and please read through them all first to ensure there are no duplicate suggestions. Oh, and you don't have to put the numbers in there either, but please do put your username at the end!

Over to you.

Do a quick check to make sure that all cables are connected and that power switches are switched on before calling us. We can help reconnect cables if you are not sure where they go.

Keep them coming. Remember to keep them short and also try and give a symptom then a cure rather than just the cure as it will stick in users minds better.

Try accessing several different websites and network before you call to tell us the internet is not working for you. This will help us greatly in diagnosing the issue early.

Getting strange popups regularly? Don't ignore them, they could be a sign of a virus or malware. Let IT know as soon as possible, if not sooner.

Please read the error message, it can sometimes tell you how to fix the problem yourself, and really helps us identify the problem quickly when you report it.
