ndart Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Upgraded one of our DC's to Server 2012 R2 and low and behold: Internet Explorer Maintenance has been either removed or relocated under GPO via Domain since our upgrade so all the faves are not populating on new PC's. What with the mapped network drives not working either this seems to be a slight issue. Anybody found this yet? Any ideas where it's gone?
Davit2005 Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Because with Internet Explorer 10 MS in their wisdom and lack thought for us support techies removed the support for Internet Explorer Maintenance which as well as home page, favorites amongst other things leaving us to find other methods of specifying such things as proxies which most of us use in schools. Even installing IE10 on the server can cause issues I believe.

I have been googling and found this: Appendix B: Replacements for Internet Explorer Maintenance and then this: Internet Explorer Administration Kit. It looks to me that you have to use this software to specify which version of IE it's going to leverage and then import all of your settings a URL's this way. It seems that you have to specify which type x86 or 64bit as well. This is making IE maintenance a nightmare. Tell me I have this wrong please! If not then we run different versions of IE in different places because some software is not compatible with old software. To my knowledge we have: IE 8,9,10 and now 11 running in both x86 and 64bit versions so that means 8 of the same configs plus two different grouping so that 16 policies instead of (2). By the way do I run the IEAK package from the main Schema Master (PDC) or can I run it form my machine and then when I have set this, does it deploy IE or does it just update! very confused!
FN-GM Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 For your favourites, redirect them. Thats what we do here. Can you just use GPP? Doesn't work properly for Proxy settings on IE 10+
3s-gtech Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 We use GPP for IE10 proxy settings, works fine. We have moved everything defined in IEM to GPP and regular GP, not too bad a job.

DrCheese Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 The annoying thing about GPP is that the IE10 settings aren't applied to IE11. Nor does IE11 even appear in GPP yet (when using a 2012 R2 server). I can only guess that it'll be added when IEAK 11 is out which.. isn't yet annoying! I want to deploy a 2012 R2 TS server :|
Michael Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 IE Maintenance also disappears when installing IE10 on 2008 R2 also. One solution is to uninstall IE10 on 2008 R2 and return to IE9, or on a Windows 7 workstation (with RSAT), uninstall IE10 and return to IE9. Both methods restore the IE Maintenance. Question is however, if you have a 2012 or 2012 R2 DC and you're using a Windows 7 workstation with IE9 and RSAT installed, would it still offer IE Maintenance? In theory yes - it's certainly with a try. You only need one PC configured like this, irrelevant if everything else is running IE10.
3s-gtech Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Nope, no .pac. No need for us particularly, any machines that connect off the domain either have two browsers or use the transparent proxy on the guest SSID.

3s-gtech Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Just today found that the XML hack to make it possible to administer GPP for IE10 on Server 2008 R2 also works fine for IE11, so we can stick with this for a while.
3s-gtech Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 How to do it? It's nice and easy. Create the GPO and build the GPP for Internet Options within it. Now browse to the Policies folder in your sysvol, and open the relevant one (you can find the ID for it in Group Policy Management). Browse in Explorer to User\Preferences\Internet Options and open the xml file within. Change the max=9.0.0.0 setting to max=99.0.0.0. Save it, job done.
