Moodle - Outward Facing

Hi guy’s I’ve been looking on this forum and even the moodle website to find out how to make our moodle site available over the internet, it is currently only available internal.

I am currently running moodle on a Windows XP machine with Apache, PHP and Mysql; we also have ISA 2006 running on a separate server as well.

I understand how to get the link between moodle-ISA and then the outside world but I need to have a certificate because the address that the LEA has given us requires SSL.

I know about openssl but I have no idea how u install and configure it for a windows environment.

Any help would be great and keep SMT of my back.

To create a certificate you simply install the Certificate Authority service to one of your domain controllers. This will create one for you. As for ghetting it outwards facing, don't you think that installing your Moodle to a server base forst would be a good idea?

i was told that it didn't matter wether it was server 2003 or xp that moodle was installed to and i've never had any problems with it being sat on the xp machine. i do have it set up as a server with a static IP.

Not sure if it applies to it running as a web server, but I know for accessing file shares etc, xp is limited to maximum of 10 simultaneous incoming connections. Maybe a little limiting.

No that limit does apply. There is a total half open connection limit in XP SP2 of 10 (You'll get event id 4226 logged if you hit it). You can remove this limit though:

But the EULA will cause your licenses to explode if you apply this patch

Apache is the web server, so it doesn't matter we have over a 100 users using it at any one point during the day and it doesn't cause a problem.

Gotta ask, if your running all this free software stack why you don't go the whole hog and install it on *nix box.

 

I mean if you can manage to install Apache, PHP, MySQL and moodle, then surely you've got the skills to install a debian box.
