What backup software are people using on Server 2012?

Hi,

 

Just brought a new server which we want to be our main server.

 

Didn't realise Backup Exec 2012 is not yet supported (how annoying) Does anyone know when a supported version will be available?

 

What other backup software are you using? - need to be able to back up to LTO4 tape.

 

I use Microsoft Data Protection manager on another server but have never found it to be very good at all.

 

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've just had to keep my backup servers on 2008 R2 to use BE. But I won't be using Backup Exec in future after this, Symantec are completely and utterly hopeless. To not have support for an OS a full year after it's release is ridiculous

I found version DPM 2010 fails perhaps 2 or 3 days out of every 5 whereas Symantec literally never goes wrong.

 

What version are you using?

BackupAssist here. Works very well. Including with Hyper-V backup, deduplicated volume support, and hyper-v on SMB3.0 backup.

Does Macrium Reflect have the ability to restore to virtual machine rather than hardware? I'm currently looking at upgrading to Backup Exec 2012 for this feature (in other thread) but am now wondering about this option.

BackupExec Here on a Dell 124T Tape Library working 3 Tape Sets (of 7 Tapes). + Shadow Copy + SCP Based Crons and Rsyncs.

 

I did a MASSIVE data backup review this summer, i trialed MANY (to many to list) different solutions. IF you are using a tape library very few actually support them. Backup Exec is exspensive a resource hog and generally quite a pain to actuall "do things" with and "setup". However! That all being said, after all my testing and research, it's the only think I trust on my budget.

 

IF however, i had "funds" i would probably buy some colo up the road from me a lease line and do it all in a private cloud. But last time i costed that stuff up it was going to cost £2000 a year for the most basic solution i tryed to design. Getting contractors in to do the same job seemed even more exspensive.

 

I will be very interested in this thread also as i'm not convinced that my solution is the best . It does however work, so for the moment i'm happy!

We have DPM 2012 SP1 and i can't remember last time it failed. Things might have got better.

Used Backup Exec a lot, I quite liked 2010 with a tape library and all the policies etc, pity 2012 is a bit rubbish, but they may fix it for the next version.

 

Also been starting to use DPM 2012 recently and it's different, but no less terrible than BE, it really hates to tell you anything about what is actually going on.

 

A question for the DPM users, has anyone tried disaster recovery with it yet? As in blank server without DPM and just the tape/last backup, to restored servers/VMs? I only ask because I haven't been in a position to try it yet. I have done this many times with BE and while there can be catalog issues, it's always worked eventually.

I use SCDPM 2012 SP1 and it works very well. I've performed test restores of random VMs as well as bare metal restores of physical servers - all restored perfectly.

Including starting with blank DPM? Not tried importing backups from tape yet, need to keep the certificate somewhere safe too!

Sorry to come so late to this thread.

 

We have used Retrospect for about ten years now. It's not the most intuitive programme, but it offers numerous options including tape library, binding, disk replication and so forth. The current version (8.5) works well with Server 2012.

 

More importantly, restores have always worked when we have needed them!

I use Backup Assist on 2008 R2, but I believe 2012's now supported.

 

Apologies to hijack this discussion, but does anyone use Backup Assist + SQL Addon to backup their MIS database (Facility or SIMS)?
