Extension Leads...

Whats the most you have come across daisy chained. Just gone into a new teachers room for first time since 5th Sep. We have 4 4ways all plugged into each other, spanning the width of the classroom!

 

On it to one socket were:

 

IWB

Laptop Charger

Visualiser

Phone Charger

Camera Charger

Ipad Charger

Mini Fridge!!

Amp

Some sort of small PA system

heater!

I think it would be the heater that would be the killer.

The fridge and especially the heater must have their own sockets. The heater load is too high to share. Fridges are notorious for causing power blips whenever they cut in or out.

I once manned our exhibitor stand at the ICT For Education conference in Coventry. There were only two sockets in the whole room and 30 odd exhibitors all requiring between one and 10 plugs! I've never seen anything like the daisy chain of four-ways and extension cables that the site manager ran around the room to power us all! It's a miracle we got out alive!

Is it a proper fridge or a little peltier cooled one though that would be different although those are still horrible.

It was one of those small coca cola fridges. It was the heater that was the concern.

 

I moved their desk 20cm to the left to reveal a bank of wall sockets!

Our classes have a 10 plug extension lead, had one class run a 10 meter 4 plug extension lead off it and not use the 10 plug lead for anything!

We've had our whole school re-wired because of issues like this. There are now NO extension leads in any rooms. NO daisy chains.

 

Just 4 - 8 doubles in each room (bar the student machine sockets)

I once loaned a cable reel to a member of staff; she brought it back saying it had tripped the circuit breaker in her room & the fuse had gone. She was right, the fuse had gone, probably because the insulation had melted in the core of the reel where she had used it coiled up with a kettle plugged in!

Had exactly the same here, but a heater instead of a kettle.

My Dad did that, when he plugged his welder into the reel of wire that was used for the lawn mower. This particular lawn mower didn't have a built in cable. It was stored on a metal spool to!

Found one of ours like that don't know who used it but it was a royal mess it was used as a training example for Fire Safety

I tell my missus off every week for doing this with the iron, she just doesn't believe me how dangerous it is. I've gone away some weekends and come back to find it's been sat there plugged in all weekend! I swear it's going to take a fire before she'll believe me

8 of the cheapest un-earthed continental power strips daisy chained in our Luxembourg server room! Just epic! Luckily most of them had nothing (other than another power strip) plugged in.

 

Cue a call to a 'local' spark from Belgium who came and rewired the racks live as we tried to shut stuff down.
