If it breaks, it'll be an environmental disaster.

Hope it all goes smoothly. They reckon it's moved by about a meter so far.

Yup - it hasn't got any fuel left in it (or very little compared to what was in it) as the tanks were emptied about a month after the accident.

True, but there is a lot of other stuff that can cause problems. They reckon the water that's been inside leaking out will be a problem enough, as it'll be contaminated with all the rotten food etc...

Ture, however there is all the on-board supplies that will have turned the water 'toxic'. 15,000 cartons of cigarettes that will have rotted away into the water, 10,000 water melons, all the other food, drink etc, and if I recall, still some unrecovered bodies. All that stagnant water inside the ship is their concern.

At it's current angle, you can see where the waterline was up to:

It's also been freed from the rocks.

Yup - that is the concern but in terms of environmental damage the fuel was the biggest concern. But yes the other stuff is obviously going to cause an issue.

From my understanding though they are trying to keep as much water inside the ship as possible and take it to dry docks to empty/decontaminate as much as possible?

I bet it will slow the process down a bit. I wonder how few cables they can complete the lift with. I'm sure they included a few extra in case of breakages.

This is the game plan:

Something very ironic about these being on the list...

I had a little chuckle at the 10 bottles of communion wine. All that other stuff and they included those 10 bottles on the list!

I've got a safety boat certificate and I don't understand all the fuss. Chuck a rope over the hull, midships and tie it to the opposite stanchions. Attach the rope to the back of a rescue boat then drive off sideways with the throttle open. It works with sailing dinghies.

Another PB'er...just use another cruise ship to assist what's the wort that could happen ;)

From the list I doubt flour still exists and the frozen chicken will no longer be frozen but the smell.... Sod that

According to one of their press conferences, those cables weren't snapped cables - they were the excess cable after they've been shortened to increase tension.

Quite an impressive feat of engineering.

The Beeb have some good pictures of it now it's light:

I hope for the family sake, the two reaming bodies are located, however after 20 months, I'm not sure how much of them will remain.
