Blurry projector

I have an InFocus IN104 that is, quite ironically, not in focus.

 

It's running at the native resolution but everything, including the on-screen menu, is significantly blurry. The focussing rings are working and I can move beyond the 'best' focus point in either direction, but the best is pretty bad. It was perfectly crisp up until a few months ago - not sure when exactly it went wrong as its in a room where staff rarely report problems, and even when I mentioned it the teacher in the room at the time said they hadn't noticed(!)

 

Have given it a blast through with an air compressor, which made no difference. Here's what is looks like at its 'best' focus point (cameraphone unfortunately which isn't helping, but you get the idea).

 

 

It's 3 years old (so inside warranty), but does anyone have any suggestions before I attempt to deal with the ever-helpful InFocus support line?

I had pupils smear things on the lens and once a pupil took the lid of a milk bottle and placed it over a lens. It looked like part of the projector until I scrutinised it!

 

Anyhow wipe the lens. (sorry if this sounds super patronising but you didn't mention lens cleaning)

 

EDIT:

 

Just to clarify it was the little plastic bit under the bottle lid that then melted to the lens. It looked perfectly circular and proper until I turned the projector off and put it on the bench.

I had given it a quick wipe, but even after a proper clean there is no improvement unfortunately

VGA connection? A bent pin on the vga lead has caused all sorts of errors for me in the past. Also worth checking the vga wall socket, or at least, remove it as a suspect.

I had this on a unit recently - it wasn't clear even at its optimal focal point. I think something has gone wrong with the mirror setup inside, perhaps from a sharp knock or other abuse. Had to write it off though

Wow, funny timing, I have just been tottering on top a very tall ladder on the hall trying to troubleshoot the very same problem.

Doesn't appear to be anything we can do to sort it out though. I am thinking its internal...

I would take it down load try it with a different computer and vga load.

 

I have seen it where the cable or sockets have been damaged. Vga splitter has gone or needs a reboot. Refreshment rates are ok for the monitor but not the projector.

 

Check the filters and clean and blow the projector out with compressed air.

Have tried with a different input and as I said before, even the on-screen menu is blurred, as is the boot-up image. Lamp has 766 hours on it which doesn't seem that high to me, but I'll swap the lamp with one from a working projector and see what happens. Edited September 16, 2013 by AngryTechnician

If the focus is out I doubt a new bulb will have any effect tbh it sounds like it's had a whack and the internals are out of alignment.

Sorry to resurrect this donkeys years old thread but i've got the same issue with an infocus projector and was wondering if anyone managed to resolve it, or if it's an internal hardware issue.

they seem to damage the internal mirrors iirc and all you can do is either put up wih it or replace it

This is a very common problem with this projector, and the Mitsubishi EX200 and 240. Same lens and projector manufacturer, I believe Coretronics. The problem is the lens itself. Why they fail over time, I don't know, but I have replaced several of them. You can try DEX, who supposedly sells Infocus parts, but everytime I try to get them from DEX, they either don't respond to my emails or phone messages, or don't have the lens. Right now the only place I can get them is from Mitsubishi, and I don't know if they will sell to you if you are not an authorized service center. By the way, if you get a new lens and it is still out of focus, don't assume that the new lens must be good. I once had a shipment of three new lenses from Mitsubishi, and they were all bad.
