Hi All,

Does anyone have any ideas, or has trialled a media solution on Server 2012?

I am looking at either plex or xmbc to run at boot but based on WS 2012 platform.

Would like to know what roles/ features I may need

This will be built on a HP Microserver n40l standard physical build no virtualization.

Any input/ help would be appreciated

kind regards

If you're gonna be running it on a machine like that I'd highly recommend using a linux OS - the overhead associated just by having windows installed would likely cause you performance issues.

What's the end use of the machine going to be?

Although I agree that running Plex on Server 2012 is overkill, it's not going to cause performance issues. Windows Server is a perfectly capable file server and has been since the Windows 2000 days, probably before.

Doing media transcoding on a 1.5ghz AMD chip? As that'd be the main reason to run XBMC on one, and why I asked what it's usage would be.

I'd disagree that under those circumstances Windows would run anywhere near as well as linux.

I currently have it running on linux ubuntu 12.2 (xbmcbuntu) but its causing problems. I have a second 2 tb drive that contains a lot of media (showreels for some of the work we create) but whenever the machine is rebooted it loses access to the file location I then have to open ubuntu up. I have checked permissions, dismounted and remounted the drive in different locations to the point I want to go back to windows.

Sounds like you wanna setup a systemwide mount: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions

Installing Linux isn't going to magically make the AMD Turion II Neo CPU in the Microserver perform like a Core i3/i5/i7. It's not much faster than an Atom D2700!

I wouldn't attempt to do any transcoding on that thing regardless of OS.

Add to that, I don't know about XMBC but Plex will usually only transcode if it's playing to a mobile client and even then it'll only do that if the content isn't H264. If you're using the desktop client it'll play the file back natively or re-mux it if it's H264 inside a MKV or similar.

Thanks Dom i'll check it out when I get back the only other problem I was having was with the video playback, when playing video media the moving picture seems to judder now and again which is weird because I have installed a sapphire 5450 hd graphics card and had no problems when I had it running windows originally.
