Now, the user may actually be entitled to keep said laptop - it all depends on the users contract as well as the employers IT policy - which usually says something along the lines of providing use of IT facilities (software, network resources, hardware) for the duration of their tenure with the company

If that is the case then unfortunately, said use is fully within their contracted rights to keep said laptop until they officially leave employment..

Teachers have laptop use written into their contracts these days?

With the KMS plan, I thought falling out of the scope didn't particularly reduce functionality - don't you just get a warning?

@LeMarchand - It will fall back to the grace period, and then if still not reactivated, it will get stuck on screen forcing activation

OK. I just have a vague memory of one teacher complaining that her laptop kept flashing warnings at her and it turning out that she permanently kept it at home. I thought it was just that she found the warnings annoying, as she never stated that she couldn't use it. Of course, a lot of fuss was made about having to bring the machine into school to authenticate!

this is all hypothetical of course.

Should this happen then a temp replacement laptop will be issues but unfortunately cant guarantee it will be brand new. Thanks for responses people. Funny thing is i quite like the person but anyone who decides to mess with my summer plans is in for a shock.

btw its not an obligation to provide laptops. We just do because it helps the teaching but can call them in at any time.

Got to say, so what if they want it until the end of their contract? If the norm is that laptops are returned at the end of the term, that is the precedient, and unless somewhere in a contract it says that they will/should have access to school resources for their entire contract, it is the 'norm' and the precident that wins.

Now, here "the norm" allows for "the exception", which can either be granted by my team, or HR/The Head. With the risks being assumed by the person granting the exception. Exceptions are not always granted. The more acremonious the departure the sooner kit is recovered and accounts locked, if the organisation no longer expect the individual to perform any function or role, there is not longer any need for them to have access to resources.

It is a good idea to be able to remotely lock a device, so that in a case where management want you to, you can.

Does this person have an office? Swap it out for a desktop. If the person is going to keep it until their contract runs out, but is actually going to be done with work sooner then odds are they're just keeping it out of spite and have no intention of using it. Breaking it probably wouldn't do anything.

Or, as was the case with an ex member of staff; they're keeping it until they leave, at which point they'll "forget" to bring it in. Free laptop.

Send a memo round saying that a battery fault has been identified with and all staff must return them as soon as possible.

You could elaborate to highlight that the battery has been found to leak harmful chemicals when it gets hot, and in rare cases may explode.

Should do the trick :D
