How to test WOL working?

This may sound like a stupid question, in fact it may even be a stupid question!

 

But how do you test that your computer is setup correctly to wake on lan?

Try it on a test pc and see if it wakes up? You can get simple exe to just send the packet by mac/IP etc

 

(Or via phone, Got free WOL app for iPhone etc)

Turn the computer off, then send a WOL packet to it and see if it turns on. Simple as that for me.

You can do it command prompt, but it's epic commands. Else just download this and put in an IP/MAC etc.

One thing ive just found out. If you switch the pc of at the wall and then back on again, WOL wont work until you start the machine and windows and then shut it down again. Thats with Dells anyway.

Yeah the NIC reserves a small bit of power on shutdown to make WOL work, it doesn't have this if its turned off at the wall so needs a power cycle.

A vbs and a text file with a list of mac addresses ( one per line ) and do it that way. Could do the same with a bat file no doubt. Then just run said script when needed ?

 

You could just use the above exe as mentioned by @Steve21 and script that ?

Just thinking about this, it always used to be the case, can anyone enlightment me as to whether its still true, I do remember reading about manufactures looking at making NICs that didn't need the power cycle but just needed connecting to the mains?
