Passed my 70-290!

Yay! I was DREADING this exam as I have virtually NIL experience in Server 2003 and have only just began picking it up (At work we use Novell!)

 

Anyway about 25% of the exam was on backups! 8O I'm still puzzled and want to get my mind clear...Which is the 'quickest' form of backup - Incremental or Differential?

Congrats! I'm currently studying 70-290 myself. How did you find the questions?

 

As for the backup question, I don't know (havnt got the book nearby) but I think it was incremental. Don't quote me on that though!

You could argue that the differential backup is marginally faster because it doesn't have to reset the archive attribute

Both will probably be relatively quick - Just dont expect to save time on a restore job with them

Differential backups do not reset the archive bit and therefore grow continuously until a normal backup is done.

 

Differential backups take longer (assuming you do a sequence of them), and use more space on the backup device, but they are much easier to restore from as a complete dataset can be restored by using the most recent full backup plus the most recent differential backup.

Hmm. In which case the exam was quite misleading then! As I seem to remember it said 'Choosing the fastest method' but did not IIRC state if that meant the fastest possible backup or the fastest possible recovery!

 

It is at times like this I really wish the results would show you the questions you got wrong!

I've done the 70-290 myself and I also remember a lot of backup questions (a lot of dragging and dropping IIRC). From what I remember, there was usually something in the question which helped you to choose between incremental of differential. I definitely remember a question which was based around a method that would give the quickest restore time.
