But even I can see that Wimbledon has taken an unusual turn today.

 

Out today: Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic, Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

 

That added to Rafael Nadal going out makes for a memorable championship [and it is only Wednesday of the first week!]

I follow tennis... and Murray's chances have definitely improved.

 

The complaints about slippery courts could be down to either players who aren't used to grass as the regulars don't seem to have as many problems... or maybe the younger players aren't wearing appropriate shoes.

That Federer match was great. Some good, old fashioned, elegant tennis with some really classy, deft shots. So nice to see a serve, volley match, rather than the usual baseline 'wham bam' game!

Have to say I wondered the same thing. I can't imagine the courts are any different this year and they have always been somewhat slippery in the first week. Perhaps they haven't had so much practice on grass this year?

I know he isn't one of the younger players you are referring to here but wasn't Roger Federer told that he couldn't use his shoes of choice this year because they had orange soles [or something?]

I don't think RF was one of the players slipping on the court though.

Rog didn't slip. He just wasn't playing well enough I thought he would retire at the end of last season, but sadly he didn't.

In his press conference, Leyton Hewitt said the courts are always slippery during week one. I think part of the problem is that players are pushing themselves to the limits to get to the ball. If you are at absolute full stretch and you slip, then chances are it will hurt.

 

I thoroughly enjoyed the Stakhovsky v Federer match. There must have been a new record for the number of autographs signed. His wife's not bad either

I'm an avid follower of tennis, but, in my honest opinion, just a bad day for them all. Only Nadal and Djok can rival Fed, and vice versa, versa. I absolutely despise Murray. His attitude and just generally the way he talks on and off the pitch is enough for anyone to throw a racket to his head.

 

Sharapova (oo lala) and Wozniacks match i missed, but a shocker non the less!

 

Tsonga is a great future prospect for tennis, and has nice humor. Feel sorry for anyone going out with a injury.

I don't despise him, I dislike him. However I want him to win as it'll be great for British tennis! Who do you think will be able to stop Murray now then? Nadal, Federer, Tsonga are gone.

That said Djokovic would beat him I think! Well it would be close at least!

Be honest. Will you ever find a Scot that will admit to following England in public?! I felt no more offended by what he said than I would by an Englishman supporting anbody but Germany, or a Man U fan supporting anybody but City.

 

When we were at the Paralympic Basketball last summer, we were watching Spain v Germany and the largely British crowd were supporting Spain... the little boy behind me asked his Dad why and everyone who heard the question burst out laughing

 

Similarly at the Water Polo, Team GB were playing a south American team (I forget which) and the pre match warm up asked a French fan who she was supporting.... it wasn't Team GB. He asked why and again the crowd all laughed, we didn't need an explanation.

 

I certainly don't hold that comment against Andy Murray... it's exactly what all my Scottish friends would say

I take it none of you saw the bbc1 program on him (Murray) on Monday night? I think it was Tim Henman that explained the "why support England" comment and that it was taken out of context. Im not a tennis fan, much rather watch rugby (purely for the sport.....) but having watched the program have actually found a new respect for Andy Murray.
