roland Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Hi, Can someone please point me to a script / software which I can use to report Students who continue to store *.mp3 *.avi *.ogg in their home drives and My Documents? I have just done a search and there are GB's of *.mp3 *.avi *.oggs I am looking for a script that I can run / print and simply hand the output to management. (hopefully categorized by user/student) - best Roland
Marvintpa Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Now that would be nice. I have never managed to find anything that complex. so I get my laddo to trawl the filestore and find the files. This summer I have reduced the 68Gb of student filestore to 39Gb by just removing Any non course related Music, Video and Pictures from all year groups.
kingswood Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Haven't got a script that does it, but I do use something called "Agent Ransack" to search both staff and student areas for MP3s etc. It finds them by username and you can take screenshots etc. I believe the software is free. Been using it for nearly two years with great effect! Edit: Duh! Are you using Server 2003 R2? Because if you are you can run reports using FRSM. And you can screen those files too. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/storage/default.mspx http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/0b7566a4-ace9-4872-9246-86d26573983a1033.mspx?mfr=true What I do is run a file screen on .EXE files that users have in their home areas. I will have to run one myself on music files too just to see if it works like it says on the tin. Paul
SteveBentley Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Good old DOS can sort this one - just cd to the top level directory which the student home folders are in and use dir /S *.mp3 > report.txt
SpuffMonkey Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Good old DOS can sort this one - just cd to the top level directory which the student home folders are in and use dir /S *.mp3 > report.txt Yeah - though I just run a del instead and capture the output to a file - 2 things sorted for the price of one!

With courses like DiDA I've found that this approach can be a little BOFH. When it's blatantly just the latest Akon or other such sh**e then it gets deleted but I think judgment calls are becoming more frequent with all types of multimedia files on the network.
srochford Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 We generate reports on what look like the bad guys - it then takes human intervention to decide if they really are bad :-) Details at http://techinfo.cnwl.ac.uk/Windows%20Scripts/default.asp?dest=Home%20Folder%20Contents.htm If you're running Server 2003 R2 then you can block certain file types. As far as I can tell, you can't apply this to a particular group but you can exempt particular folders (so you block MP3 for all folders under d:\home but allow MP3 in d:\home\ - some details at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/storage/default.mspx
john Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Im sure you can just scan over the folders for any file type, and it will just report it and then you can take action from then.
