Can i keep my Landline number if i move towns?

I think it all depends on what the Area codes are in the new town your moving to and if the number set up is the same.

If you move out of the exchange area then no, you usually can't keep your number I'm afraid

As @witch said, if you move to a different exchange then you'll also lose the number.

We had this put in place temporarily recently at our school when the PBX went down. All calls to the school number were redirected to our Receptionist's personal phone. Worked perfectly.

Move to Zen internet use there broadband voice option (essentially sip) and migrate the code with area number to use anywhere in the world!

 

EDIT: zen also do monthly contracts so you can cancel it after a few months rather than 12

You could do that, I used Vonage a few years ago. Some providers allow you to transfer your number to SIP but if you want to keep your broadband service running not sure if this will be possible.

You CAN keep your number if you move towns, with BT it was called getting an Our of Exchange Number and was very expensive - and I'm not sure if this is still in their price list)

 

Several providers do this - gradwell is one (I didn't use them)

 

I've done this myself in the last 2 months (moved from Essex to Dorset - kept my number) - you can PM me for the provider I used, as I can't recall if it a standard service they offer of if they just did it for me as a favour (they provide me with business services)

 

EDIT : Just to clarify - you basically port your number to a SIP provider and then redirect it to your new line

SIP is the way forward. We have a London number here but we are based in Rochdale.

 

If you port your landline to a SIP provider and forward it on, you can keep it forever then.

Well... that explains why HP comes up as "Swindon" on my phone, but I deal with someone I KNOW is based in India [it's in his e-mail signature.]
