Apple quietly launches Mac Pro (Late 2013) Repair Program for graphics card/video issues

Apple is launching a new Mac Pro Repair Extension Program to address complaints of video related issues with select models of its latest high-end desktop offering, 9to5Mac has learned. We obtained the notice (pictured below) that Apple this week sent out to its authorized service providers detailing the new program and those eligible for repairs or replacements.

 

In the notice, Apple notes that Mac Pros manufactured between 8 February 2015 and 11 April 2015 are eligible for repairs due to issues with the machine’s graphics cards that “may cause distorted video, no video, system instability, freezing, restarts, shut downs, or may prevent system start up.”

 

Apple goes into a bit more detail about the symptoms eligible for repair:

 

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the external display
  • No video on the external display even though the computer is on
  • Computer freezes or restarts unexpectedly
  • Computer will not start up

Apple has instructed staff and authorized service providers to fix eligible Mac Pros showing signs of graphics issues at no charge to the customer. The repair will consist of Apple swapping out the graphics card and on average will take 3-5 days.

 

Apple hasn’t publicly announced the program, and it’s unclear if it might do so at a later point or leave it to retail staff and authorized service providers to inform customers on a case by case basis. A search on Apple’s support forums does show lengthy threads with a number of users complaining of similar problems with the Mac Pro including both machines that fall within Apple’s guidelines for eligibility and some that don’t.

 

While this is the first repair program launched for the Mac Pro (Late 2013), Apple in February of last year launched a repair extension program for MacBook Pros manufactured between 2011 and 2013 due to similar graphics related issues.

I'm guessing its a BGA issue rather than dead chips, exaggerated by poor cooling.

There are a mix of Nvidia and AMD chips in the affected models.

 

Hardly surprising Apple are being quiet about it, they don't like to admit when their hardware isn't as awesome as their marketing is.

The Mac Pro Lives

 

Let’s not beat around the bush. I have great news to share:

 

Apple is currently hard at work on a “completely rethought” Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis. They’re also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.

 

I also have not-so-great news:

 

These next-gen Mac Pros and pro displays “will not ship this year”. (I hope that means “next year”, but all Apple said was “not this year”.) In the meantime, Apple is today releasing meager speed-bump updates to the existing Mac Pros. The $2999 model goes from 4 Xeon CPU cores to 6, and from dual AMD G300 GPUs to dual G500 GPUs. The $3999 model goes from 6 CPU cores to 8, and from dual D500 GPUs to dual D800 GPUs. Nothing else is changing, including the ports. No USB-C, no Thunderbolt 3 (and so no support for the LG UltraFine 5K display).

 

But more good news, too:

 

Apple has “great” new iMacs in the pipeline, slated for release “this year”, including configurations specifically targeted at large segments of the pro market.

 

I wonder if Apple's new Mac Pro will end up looking like this German concept?

I'm looking at getting a 6 Core Mac Pro for Home. I normally keep my PC's/Mac's for around three years - I can't stretch to the twelve core finance wise. Do you recommend it as a viable decision to obtain one?

Still gonna cost far too much money for the average person to even consider owning! I'm still disappointed on no news regarding the Mac Mini, other than Phil Schiller telling us that it is "important" to them.

 

Near the end, John Paczkowski had the presence of mind to ask about the Mac Mini, which hadn’t been mentioned at all until that point. Schiller: “On that I’ll say the Mac Mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren’t bringing it up because it’s more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. … The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today.”

I'm looking at getting a 6 Core Mac Pro for home. Do you recommend it as a viable decision to obtain one?

What are you planning on using it for? :confused:

 

If I was spending my own money and needed a Mac I would get a 4.0 GHz Core i7 27" 5K iMac.

 

Not only is the iMac cheaper to purchase, it also comes with a really nice display and is as fast as or faster than the 6-core Mac Pro. :eek:

 

Third-party RAM upgrades are also cheaper for the iMac than the Mac Pro since it doesn't use expensive ECC RAM.

As far as upgrades go, it’s minimal. All Apple has done is drop the old high-end models into lower price brackets, and at the end of the day, this is still three-year-old hardware.

Nah. Apple have admitted the design of the last one was a mistake, so I would guess its going to be something different. Also, that concept uses far too much "stock" equipment for Apple.

When Apple mentioned the forthcoming Mac Pro is going to be modular, I bet that also means proprietary? :(

The previous "cheese grater" Mac Pro could use off-the-shelf parts like HDDs, SSDs, PCIe cards etc. In hindsight probably too many? :)

I have a 2014 top-spec iMac 5K Retina, however lags with the scale of Logic Projects I use (120+ track Logic Projects of MIDI) etc. I normally keep my Macs for around three years, so would look to change it before it goes obsolete.

It's a shame your tied to Apple stuff as the choice of CPUs etc is just so poor compared to non apple professional workstations. I'd take a HP Z820/Z840 any day. Still, logic is as logic does!

Hi, I do agree with you - however I've always found Logic easier to get on with than FL Studio, Pro Tools, Reason etc and works well with my workflow. I "only" do IT to create income to facilitate my Music Production, as it's where my heart admittedly is.

 

I've spent quite a few years now learning Logic Pro X and very happy with it, however I personally can't put a price on knowledge versus switching back to Windows. I don't dispute that I'm not an "Apple Person"!

 

I know you can upgrade the Pro quite a bit compared to the iMac, but I am aware it's a year older. It just crashes etc with the scale of stuff I'm doing on it - it's a beautiful display however I've got a 34" LG Ultrawide arriving today, yay. We'll see how it stacks in comparison.

Is that due to insufficient RAM? The latest 5K iMacs support 64GB RAM.

I was going to mention this :D I did a blog a couple of years ago now about how you'd do fay better getting a Z600. What with prices now a Z620 would smash the Mac pro out of the park!

I have tried using Ableton Live (9, Suite I believe?) I use it for mixing acapella's with other songs and only obtained the "Suite" version as I got a hefty discount on an eBay auction! I produce mainly electronic music, however have worked with some orchestral stuff as well. I know a few other producers that use Ableton, and have had pretty big songs out of it so will keep an open mind!

 

In regards to the HP, I see your thought process but I don't think I could give up OS X. Call it being brainwashed etc if you want but I really prefer Apple.

 

Cheers for the pointer though re. Ableton. I will take another look this weekend in a bit more depth. Hopefully it picks up all my Plugins (quite a few are 32-bit still) unlike Logic (w/out wrappers).

Don't think so. I've got 16GB's in mine currently. Doesn't seem to hit at the RAM as much as it does the CPU. I have about 5 GB's free with using Logic w/ my big projects. I use a certain VST called "Synthmaster" which is quite CPU heavy however.

For less than £1500 you can get a Z620 with 16 core/32 threads, 64GB RAM, raided SSDs plus a 2tb storage drive. hehe

You're not brainwashed, i spent from age 12 with Windows 3.0 in the early 90s until about 2012 only using Windows, was a Windows fanboy. After finally having enough of the frustration of just keeping Windows working , the mess that was Vista and seeing the direction it was going with Windows 8 i went and bought a Macbook Air, i was very anti Apple most my life. All i can say now is i wish i had moved to Mac OS sooner and not been such an anti Apple dick and just properly tried the Mac. Once you get use to Mac OS its an amazing OS and an actual pleasure to use. A nice clean desktop oriented interface too like Windows use to have, i do still miss Windows 2000 though....

Rumour: Modular Mac Pro may not ship until early 2019

 

When Apple revealed on Tuesday that the current Mac Pro will not see a major update and instead an all-new modular Mac Pro is being developed, the company stopped short of saying just when that decision was made and how long ago the new project started.

 

Apple said the modular Mac Pro won’t be available in 2017, but didn’t explicitly promise the new machine would be ready next year. OSNews managing editor Thom Holwerda believes the project actually started “only a few weeks ago” and won’t be complete as soon as we may expect.

 

Citing anonymous “people and sources who know their stuff” in his blog post, Holwerda writes that Apple’s decision “seems to have been made only in recent months” following professional user response to the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and the lack of Mac Pro updates.

 

Well, after the announcement of the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, orders for refurbished “old” MacBook Pros supposedly went through the roof, and after the initial batch of reviews came out, they shot up even higher. This response to the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar took Apple completely by surprise.

Apple held a 5-journalist "update" event and essentially stated they'd made a mistake with the "Trash Can" design. They're going back to the drawing board on the Mac Pro, and we may not see a new Mac Pro for a few years. Apple did not specify when the new Mac Pros would hit the market. They simply said it won't be this year.

wont happen apple cant put ports/switches where you can easily access them look at every current mac power switch and usb are hidden where you cant easily get to them in the aid of aesthetics

The previous Mac Pro had them at the front and easily accessible.
