New CCTV System

We are currently looking at upgrading our aging CCTV system with something a little more up to date where the images are less like zx81 images and more like HD images. Can anyone suggest how would be the best way to do this? I would think we will be needing somewhere in the region of 50 internal cameras and 10 external cameras.

 

Does anyone have any suppliers that they have used that are good in this sort of area, or has anyone got any advice on how we could do this ourselves?

I recently put up CCTV but nowhere near the scale you are requiring.

I talked our requirements over with Mark @CPLTD who put together a good deal for Y-Cam Bullet Cams (come in HD flavours as well) recording back to a Synology DS413j NAS

Everyone is really impressed with the setup and the quality of the cams.

On that sort of scale it may be worth looking at Luxriot on a Windows server for storage (assuming you want recording from cameras). If you want to do motion detection you'll either need cameras that the software will support the hardware detection, or some decent CPU power. We currently run nearly 40 cameras ranging from old analogues to 5mp hemispheric domes with motion detection on quite a few on a quad core xeon (all software based). Our storage server has a load of WD raptors (though looking at the disk load we could probably have got away with a load of 7200rpm 1TB drives in decent RAID10).

 

Cameras and software from use-ip.co.uk - Phil there is very helpful and stocks a good range of cameras.

Hi @dezt i dont know whether it would be of interest but our sister company CNS have managed and installed a lot of IP-CCTV projects in schools throughout the country. Think they mainly use Mobotix Cameras.

We run Mobotix cameras but are replacing them with Avigilon. The Avigilon software and servers are so much better than the native Mobotix system. I can give you the details of our supplier if you pm me.

Take a look at Grandstream's cameras - they're very good for their budget price. Easy to self install also - they're PoE powered, and can upload their footage to a network server. Edited May 3, 2013 by localzuk

Not my area of responsibility, but I have had to look into things from time to time. Both of these companies were helpful and informed:

The yard-stick I measure them by is how quickly they correctly summarised the systems I was needing help with. I spoke to a few other companies who clearly wouldn't have been able to find their backsides with both hands.

We do it in house with Geovision, use to use the DVR Card system but moving over to their IP Based cams now. Its a great system which you can integrate in the future with other things such as door access, number plate readers with barriers. They even do these Fisheye cams which see in all directions at once here is an example

we have a few and are great. You can get clients for ipads/iphone and android or Windows PCs. Caretakers like it as they can view them on there iphones at home.

Mirasys with vivotek cameras here. The vivotek system is highly snazzy with motion and activity search

+ 1 for Luxriot here, we have 30 plus IP HD cameras with movement and Zoom and its just a doddle very easy to setup, can't remember what the companies name who installed it but it has been great and is not bandwith hungry.
