Sheridan Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Great, come back after a couple of days off and Windows 7 has self-destructed. All staff and students fail to get their redirected desktop and start menu, with loads of errors in the event viewer like this: Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Desktop" to "\\server\desks$\staff\desktop". Redirection options=0x9008. The following error occurred: "Failed to build the list of known sub folders". Error details: "The system cannot find the file specified. I did read that KB980408 can cause this, but its not installed! Help! I've got loads of PCs playing up now!

Sheridan Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 This has cropped up again at one of our primaries with a brand new install of Windows 7. The same error and desktop redirection fails for all users. I've run the reg hack above, and removed KB2640148 which seemed to be the dodgy update but its still failing. Has anyone else found a workaround to this? I don't fancy reimaging the lot!
zag Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I seem to remember the reason for this is if we disabled the libraries and installed a windows update. Its been fine ever since I rolled out the reg update via group policy. I just left it there.

beancole Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 If you have removed the libraries this is what causes the fault. Apart from restoring the libraries and running the registry hack I really can't think of anything. Hopefully someone else will have an idea.

We have not made any changes..started work this morning with the problem popping up all over the network...only changes are Windows updates that where applied last night. I ma suspecting they are the cause of it now...just which one there was quite a few installed :-(
beancole Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I think that was also a cause if you read back. I reckon if you remove the update it will fix it. if you read back you will the the unique identifier for the update. You will probs be able to remove it with GPO.
beancole Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 FYI I turn all updates off. I just do a new image every 6 months with up to date stuff and send it out that way, can save a lot of issues. you can always put out important ones via GPO. (if it aint broke dont fix sorta attitude.) 1

(I took over as NM 3 months ago and boy the network is mess) Thanks for the pointer over the libraries issue that fixed the issue their was a GPO set to turn it off but I think Wednesday updates turned it back on... I reapplied GPO and bingo fixed...cheers for your help 1
sidewinder Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 HELP - suddenly had this issue at one site today and it is causing havoc, I am completely stumped and no-one can access anything. No updates were installed last night, however I was changing a GPO last night from home, just added another group to the folder redirection policy. I've tried the reg hack - doesn't work. Tried disabling libraries - doesnt work. Any ideas???

It turned out that even mapped drives on the affected server for users at other sites were not mapping so it was not only a folder redirection problem - bit of a red herring for me that error - should have known to always try the simple stuff first! The server in question had been running for over a year without a reboot, I had tried to reboot to finish installing updates several times over Christmas and it failed. As it was still working I left it. But for whatever reason, something broke it today
