Re: FreeDNS - yes they do dynamic dns but I also use them for static, my uhp.me.uk domain is configured with them. I have some of Google services (mail, calendar, web) set up and an A record for my ADSL IP.

Yes it's a long way off completion and I knew f2s had been taken over by pipex - my connection is OK and remains to be. However Tiscali's reputation is far worse than f2s or pipex. If the deal does go ahead (I can't see it not) then in my opinion it is all downhill from then on.

 

My 'lack-of' interjection was in reference to a) traffic shaping and b) the transfer amount halfed from 100GB/month to 50GB/month.

www.freedom2support.net you would see that OFCOM are investigating the merger between Pipex and Tiscali (yes its Pipex to Tiscali a F2S and Nildram have been part of Pipex for a good while now), so the earliest you would become Tipex is Jan 08. Its going to Pipex Shareholders this August but as OFCOM are stiring it will delay it a bit.

I wasn't aware of this little change as a Nildram user...

 

Any indication of whether Nildram will be suffering the same fate as Tiscali users or are they keeping it as is?

You get what you pay for, and i can only ever recommend Zen. There is no "unlimited" with any providor, as they all have fair usage limits hidden somewhere, and the odd few that do not are normally very poor in support or have rubbish speeds. With Zen they are upfront and say this is how much for X. You can see how much you have used realtime on the customer portal. Yeah it might be £25 for 20gig usage, but that is down data only, they do not charge up upstream data. You can have 8 static IP's , more if you can justifty it. If you want a real unlimited with Zen its £80 a month. You want decent internet you gotta pay.

Yes you will be come Tiscali. Nildram and all there bits and bobs have been part of Pipex for quite a while as well. Pipex has sold off its entire ISP Services to Tiscali, with Tiscali's view to start merging and migrating you over to there services, products and networkings in Q3 2008.

I used to be a happy Zen customer - very rock solid connection. But the price was steep. Even more so when they downgraded everyone's transfer limits without any cut in price and still only offered 2Mbit.

 

I know they've changed a few of their packages now - but upto 8Mbit, 20GB usage for £24.99/month? No thanks.. choice is a wonderful thing An extra GB of usage is only £1.49. How generous

I have been looking at PIPEX at the "Pipex DSL Flex 50" http://www.pipex.net/pg.asp?broadband what are your experiences with them? I have a domain name registered with hem they seem pretty good.

Go with Freedom2Surf in my opinion. £24.99 pcm for up to 8Mbps capped at 50gig.

 

Have been with them for three years, and I've chosen to stay with them at my new house.

 

Never had any real issues, apart from MAX when it first came out, but we all know that was down to BT.

 

Good technical support, was on the phone to one of their guys last week and he knew what he was talking about.

As for ADSL24, from my research they seem to be nearly a 1 man band based in a terraced house in Manchester, with no backup MX server for email and I forgot what else our research had shown over at F2Support, but our feeling was perhaps look at the other Enta resellers for more resilliant network setups.

Well at least I have time to get my option sorted out and migrate then... This is not good news as my experience of Tiscali has been anything but good following various relatives phoning for help.

Unfortunately you're stuck with a number of choices that have limitations.

 

Either:

a) you accept that reliability is going to be poorer but you get it cheaper and with higher caps/fair-usage-limits.

b) better reliability, probably B/W caps and more cost

I'm with Virgin, have been for years, never had a problem with download limits and it's transfering pretty constantly at 400Kb/s from newsgroups.

 

I've found when most say Unlimited (like Virgin) the only clause is the AUP which states if you do constantly download then you may be restricted speed-wise at peak times but then unrestricted off peak times. So at night you can just leave it on downloading anyway which is hardly a problem.

I can't link as it was a discussion I had with a colleague. But simple things for those with some more knoledge than me to look at and look into. ADSL24 is run by a bloke called James. He also runs dslzoneuk.net, pctech4u and pchost4u.

 

The DNS Servers for the ADSL24 site are both hosted on the same machine called Pluto.

 

When you search the address details looking at Maps it seems to indicate a house in Manchester.

 

I appologise for a mistake in the MX, there is a backup, but its in the same class as original address so redundancy could be a potential thing to look at if there is an issue with that range.

 

From a friends research, it seems that this Pluto box hosts the ADSL24 website and members email or at least the member he was using as an example.

 

Im not the person that did the digging, a fellow Edugeek (I think hes a member here) did the digging and let me know the results. I am not in any way saying that they are no good or anything like that but its just somthing to think about. I personally dig around for all I can before I sign up for something such as telecom contracts etc as for me living in the middle of knowhere its vitally importaint to me to have good comms.

hmm the tiscli proposed buyout of freedom2surf has started to make me worried and starting to look around just in case.

 

Thing with f2s it is ok if don't change anything (hence why i stayed on 2mb connection and not upgraded also the uncapped bandwidth helps).

 

Going to keep an eye on mymusage and as thinking zen 8000 package might way to go...

Anyone recommend a real cheapo broadband package - my Dad wants to get it but won't pay much - he'll be a very light user - so restrictions are fine - he's seen the Talk Talk deal - but you hear so many bad things about it, I'm trying to find something a bit bertter - but not much more expensive...

not much chance of that I know but if he did he'd qualify for their free broadband.
