School dinner staff have been banned from serving triangular flapjacks after one was thrown and hurt a pupil.

 

Caterers at Castle View School in Canvey Island, Essex, have been told instead to cut their flapjacks into squares or rectangles.

 

The secondary school is yet to comment on the incident in which a boy was hit in the face.

 

Essex County Council confirmed the incident and the subsequent decision on flapjacks.

 

The county council has been asked what guidance it gives schools about shapes of foodstuffs and whether the school would be seeking to ban other triangular items, such as wedges of pizza.

 

The local education authority has yet to respond.

 

Health and safety advisor Ray Hurst said he could not understand why triangular flapjacks had been banned, but not those cut into squares or rectangles.

 

"Anything that is thrown is likely to cause injury if it hits somebody, especially in the face or the eye," said Mr Hurst, former president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

 

"It does seem a little over the top to ban triangular flapjacks," he said.

Is this actually the case, or is it not just a little 'journalistic work picking'?

Have they banned 'any flapjack that is triangular in shape' or have they banned 'x-brand flapjack that, by coincidence and nothing more, happens to be triangular'?

 

Still over the top, anything thrown at someone's head is likely to hurt. Ban my flapjack? I'll just frisbee a plate at your face, instead.

I'd love to know which professional twit made this decision... why not just punish the child for throwing something they shouldn't rather than complicate the issue? And last time I checked, squares and rectangles have 4 corners rather than 3... :rolleyes: :rolleyes: A higher probability of hurting someone even more surely? What will they suggest next? Hexagon shape?

Triangle shaped flapjacks are lethal. Just think how lethaler they would be with four (or more) corners.

Brill To the best of my knowledge I've never had a biscuit thrown at me (touchwood), but I am pretty sure any shape would hurt hitting my face!

Just make the flapjacks tastier, discouraging the thrower - unless of course they're some kind of flapjack-hating numpty... certainly wouldn't catch me throwing perfectly good flapjack.
