Hi all,I am new to this forum, and doesn't know much about Group Policy.My official laptop has windows vista installed in it. While I have admin permission to install any software, I couldn't install "Google Talk Video chat" plugin. I am getting the below message.."your network administrator has applied a Group policy that prevents installation"I tried opening group policy editor console by gpedit.msc, and went through it, couldn't find anything that helps me. Since it is a laptop I don't have to be connected to my domain network always. If somehow I could install the Google talk video plugin, it would be so helpful guys. Thanks in advance ...

Group policy is used to manage computers belonging to the network of a school or other organisation.

 

One of those policies is stopping you installing software which is not unusual. You cannot get round it. You need to ask your network administrator to install the software for you using their master login and password.

Hi elsiegee, Thanks a lot for replying, While i am able to install other software, and I don't have to be connected to the network always, so isn't possible to override the group policy that prevents installation via gpedit.msc.

You are asking for help to bypass a school policy at a school admin forum. Do you see the irony?

Group policy applies even when the laptop is not on the network. It's supposed to. Having an 'official' laptop doesn't mean you have the right to do what you like with it.

Right click the installer and run as administrator should work providing you have been given local admin rights.

Hi please note if you are found by your network administrator to be attempting to circumvent policy you could loose your school equipment talk to you network manager. School has to have liciences for programs install or they can be fined.

Well, he says he does, but I have just tried and I can download the thing he wants without running it as admin so if he had proper permissions then he would be able to as well.

Hmmm. Possibly. But either way, if it doesn't work if he runs it as admin then he needs to speak to his network admin who will probably install it for him. He certainly can't mess with group policy on his network admins network

It's not the way I'd run a system, but if I was forced to give people admin rights on "their" laptops, for example, I wouldn't hesitate to lock those people out of certain areas with GPOs. So local Admin account doesn't have to mean "should be allowed to do this".
