CHR1S Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 It backs up the C: drive fine, moves to the D: drive and it just seems to time out and fail. Event Type: Error Event Source: NTBackup Event Category: None Event ID: 8001 Date: 09/03/2013 Time: 21:51:45 User: N/A Computer: Description: End Backup of 'D:' 'Warnings or errors were encountered.' Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media. Error reported: Unknown error. There may be a hardware or media problem. Please check the system event log for relevant failures. The operation was ended. Backup completed on 09/03/2013 at 21:51. Any Ideas?
Mcshammer_dj Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 On my servers this is normally a sign of problems on the media, what are you backing up onto??
Bertie_Dellend Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 It backs up the C: drive fine, moves to the D: drive and it just seems to time out and fail. So I consult the report - Error: D: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. There is space, the drives are online and accessible. Any Ideas? We had this some time ago and to be honest it turned out to be lack of space. Not sure if ntbackup creates large temp files or similar, but as I say at first glance there appeared to be sufficient space - but there wasn't! This was our scenario with this error message anyway. Not saying yours is the same, but I would definitely try larger media if possible to rule it out.
laserblazer Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I had a similar thing backing up to a USB caddy. I could access the backup drive, manipulate files and all looked fine. But NTBackup failed. I swapped out the caddy and it's right as rain. Do you have another backup device you can try?
CHR1S Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 2TB drive with a backup size of approx 900GB, 1.7Tb Free Just did a new backup selection, will see how it goes.
AngryTechnician Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 How big is the backup file getting? Could it be running into a maximum file size problem on the filesystem of the NAS? Conversely, are there any large files in the source that could be too big for NTBackup?
laserblazer Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Have you tried backing up a smaller number of files? That should help determine if it's a file size issue.
CHR1S Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 @AngryTechnician @laserblazer - just trying your suggestions now, will let you know.
mattx Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Is the drive mapped ? Or are you backing up using \\blahblahserver\share ?
CHR1S Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Is the drive mapped ? Or are you backing up using \\blahblahserver\share ? Tested with both mapped and UNC Current backup of H: Drive going fine (touch wood) Seems specific to the D: drive, will investigate further.
