Cisco are great but they can be more expensive, and you can sometimes get more out of your kit for less money than you can with Cisco and if IIRC Cisco's licensing and support costs are through the roof!

Yep they where looked at. We still have spare money, we hand the funds for them. The money was ring fenced for a very specific purpose.

So schools/ councils buy laods of stuff they might not need just because they have to spend the money. Nothing like someone willing to hold there hand up and say wait a minute we don't need all this money give it to someone else. Not saying you should have to FN-GM, I am just saying in general, places burn money on things. That same money might have been used elsewhere in society, such as an old persons heating... In reality if a school/ council said we don't need that money for that it would probably go back to central government and wasted by them on something else anyway, instead of used to lower a budget deficit, or help someone in need but still, makes you think. But the be fair, it didn't cost what is claimed in this thread. Those prices are way out.

That would be a godsend for me there's fibre everywhere here which really drives up the costs. I really wanted to go Cisco for our new core switch but the costs were prohibitive. Ended up going for a HP5412ZL. Twice the slots, twice the ports, twice the PSUs for a third of the price of a Cisco 4507e. Guess we're to remain a HP shop! And there was me wanting to develop my cisco CLI skillz. *sigh* 1

I was able to get roughly twice the ports fitted for a third of the price of what I had originally planned to get on the cisco, was my point. 4 x 900w PSUs in mine to cater for POE if a phase goes down (and loses 2 PSUs). Rob - am thinking of trying to build a home lab for cisco but not sure what actual equipment is needed? Not much budget either. Not feeling hopeful!
twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Home lab to start with. 3560-24 ( 100mb L3) 1760 router couple of 87x routers couple of old 2900XL or 3500 switches. That should be a very good start giving you most of the functionality you will need. IOS versions are the main thing to look for , Advanced Enterprise is realy the one you want for the routers. For switch gear you should be able to download IOS off CISCOS site but not for routers. Rob 1
