robert.mabbutt Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Howdy all! As of September Bromcom is going and we are moving to SIMS for our registration/attendance needs! DOT ICT have been 'consulting' SMT and the Bursar with regards to the best procedure, I explain what is happening and would welcome any comments and advise! Personally I have not had hardly any dealings with DOT ICT so I shall approach their work practices and attitude with an open mind! During August DOT ICT will take our Admin server off site to rebuild and bring back to add as a member Server to the curriculum domain (Currently we only work on the curric domain DOT ICT and the Bursar control sorry work on the Admin domain) Once the server is rebuilt DOT ICT will come in add the server as member to the curric domain and add all Admin PC's to it! During this process they are installing a new managed switched as well. The next phase is for them to come in and install SIMS on teachers PC (and supposedly show us how to install SIMS) Come September in theory all PC's and Servers should be up and running! Our Bursar has decided that the Server will stay in the Admin section of the building, where she will manage back-ups and all issues relating to SIMS (Currently we have about 15 users, this will jump to about 100) Also we are running Ranger on all Curric PC's, it has been advised that this not be installed on any Admin machines. Secondly DOT ICT recommend we make all teachers Power Users for the local machine as well, just wondering does anyone run SIMS and Ranger and also do we really need to make them Power Users? paul Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 No you don't need to make them all power users, all you need to do is give them full access to the following files/folders on each workstation: C:\program files\sims C:\windows\sims.ini and C:\sims (for workstations running finance You will also need to give full access to the following registry key for auto updates to work: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\classes Hope this helps.
ajbritton Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Indeed, there is a SIMS batch files called SIMSPERM.BAT, which will grant the necessary permissions for a specified domain group (eg SIMSUSERS). The permissions are required to enable SIMS to to upgrades to itself.
john Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I vote that bat file gets its name changed as it can be read wrong, it needs a hyphen in it to become SIMS-PERM.BAT as SIM SPERM is just wrong

We had an idea to give permission to the SIMS folders but didn't think about the registry entry! Does anyone else have any helpful comments/suggestions lol I'm trying to fully prepare myself! Robert
GrumbleDook Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Yes, check your SLA very carefully ... find out what level you signed up for and see what they will and won't do on your network after the admin domain is dropped. You might also be actually paying over the odds ... but not much you can change this late in the year about it. Give me a shout on Tuesday, I would like a chat about a few things.
ajbritton Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 If the Admin and Curric domains are part of the same forest, and the Admin domain is the forest root, then taking it away will (I'm 95% certain) have serious repercussions for any domains remaining. I mention this because that is how I set up schools which I support. If it is the case that the Admin and Curric domains share the same forest, and the the Admin domain is the forest root domain, then it would be necessary to retain a domain controller for that domain. This could be done using a virtual server if there is a physical server with the necessary spare resources.
GrumbleDook Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Traditionally, within Northants, the admin and curriculum were 2 separate domains and often on separate physical networks, or perhaps routed through the RBC provided router. Separate Forests ... the lot.
