Hi all anyone know anymore about this or what specific software she talks of ? its all a bit vague...

I think it's to do with the re-licensing for SIMS .net. LA's usually bulk buy SIMS licenses direct from Capita for LA supported schools, but when a school becomes an Academy, the license is not transferable from the LA and the school has to purchase a SIMS license directly from Capita I believe. That article is talking about SIMS. A lot of LEA's, like Suffolk I believe, entered into a deal with Capita and the LEA rolled out SIMS to all schools. Under the deal, usually, the LEA does all the support work instead of Capita. Schools using SIMS under such an arrange have to purchase their own copy of SIMS upon conversion. This doesn't effect schools who has previously purchased their own independent copy of SIMS and are being supported directly from Capita, like us. Schools with their own per-existing copy only need to pay a £200 admin fee to transfer the license to the new entity.

 

There is a similar question over Microsoft licensing that I've never got to the bottom off. In MS's case volume licenses are attached to a Master Agreement. If that Master Agreement is held by the LA, as ours was, then I'm not sure the software can be transferred to an Academy, but no one at the LEA, Microsoft or our VAR have ever been able to confirm one way or another!

Not to mention, the re-licensing price has dropped since those heady days of £20k+ bills. You're more likely to see about £8k now than £20k, plus support.

Our Sim's relicencing cost us around £11,000 to buy the Licences as the LEA had bulk brought these tried various negotitations as a group of converter Academies about 6 of us and got around 30 % off buy going before a certain date. Also as a group renogiated few services with our LEA and got some price decreases for some of the IT Services they provide although was a bit of a minefield trying unpick some of the funding from LEA contracts as things were bungled together, well dodgy.Where we couldn't get a better deal or could do these better or cheaper in house moved away from the LEA.

For us the real big one was SIMs, as others have stated 10-20K depending. For us it was around 14k.

We paid something like £22k ages ago, but the school I was in last year spent about £14k IIRC.
