We're starting this thread in the VeryPC sponsored Green Computing forum to share and discuss interesting technology news. In particular, innovations and projects which have some relevance to the environment. We believe that, on the whole, progressions in technology are good for the environment by creating more efficient ways to produce goods, deliver services, share information and connect everyone to the world. We'll be sharing these kinds of stories and invite everyone to get involved by posting your thoughts and contributing relevant news items.

...and to kick things off, this item about a rural community in Lancashire who got fed up of waiting for Broadband, so got their shovels out and started digging ditches to lay superfast optic fibre. They now have one of the fastest internet connections in Britain running around 500Mb/second up and down:

It's an inspiring story about what a community can do for themselves rather than waiting for big business or the government to bring what they want to them.

Doesn't their ISP set their speeds? 500mb+ up/down is going to be expensive. Unless they've done the thing I'm going to mention as it can result in you getting blacklisted by EVERY ISP... which I once considered doing.

Arkholme is very much in the sticks as regards telecoms provision. Nice to see Barry Forde popping up. I knew him when he was one of the lead guys in getting CLEO setup. He wanted to do a similar thing back then and make money for CLEO by providing fast connections to rural areas where CLEO was feeing local schools IIRC.

As I live in the area and am waiting for Phase 2, so I can get a 1 Gig connection, they are their own ISP, with a connection straight into a T1 line in Manchester!

 

Cost is going to be £35 per month, including phone!!

I have to admit I'm jealous - we have 30Mb/s up and down dedicated line here at VeryPC, which is pretty useful, but it doesn't compare to 1Gb/s.

I suggest you all should buy a bit of duct work from the B4RN guys and get your name on a bit of history Well done to the team and indeed Barry is one of the Directors they have a good range of background in ISP, Networks and Telco Been good to see the stuff appearing and people going live as I live local to it all
