Sorry if this has already been asked somewhere, can't find any info. Googlefu is failing me.

 

Anyone know how to install the mbed driver silently?

 

EDIT: This is for use with Kodu, driver install pop up appears when creating a new kodu world with the micro:bit plugged in, then gives you all these cool Kodu microbit controls.

is the driver already present on the machine, but just needs privileges to install? If so, if you plug it in at the login screen and wait a little while, it should install itself.

Which you can use to program python directly to the microbit https://github.com/ntoll/mu

 

Someone's asked ARM to provide it as an MSI file, so hopefully that'll change soon.

 

For now you can probably copy the temp dir, and use dpinst.exe to install the 32 or 64bit drivers, not tried it yet

 

If you don't mean that, maybe you're in firmware update mode, not usb mass storage mode because you held down the reset button when plugging in the usb cable.

The driver pop up appears when running Kodu, so i presume Kodu needs it as an extension whereas other aspects of micro:bit don't need it?

 

EDIT: I'll have a play around with making a dpinst command to install the driver that way.

Download the drivers from https://developer.mbed.org/media/downloads/drivers/mbedWinSerial_16466.exe

 

Unzip using 7zip.

 

Run the following in a elevated command prompt in the folder you've just unzipped for 32 bit systems:

pnputil -i -a mbedSerial.inf

or for 64 bit

pnputil -i -a mbedSerial_x64.inf

 

Make sure you click the "Always trust from this publisher" checkbox, and let the driver install.

 

Run certmgr.msc, navigate to the TrustedPublishers certificate store, and export the "ARM Ltd" certificate, and save it as arm-publisher.cer in the extracted folder.

 

Create a batch file with the following content for 32 bit systems:

certutil -addstore TrustedPublisher arm-publisher.cer

pnputil -i -a mbedSerial.inf

pnputil -i -a mbedComposite.inf

or for 64 bit systems:

certutil -addstore TrustedPublisher arm-publisher.cer

pnputil -i -a mbedSerial_x64.inf

pnputil -i -a mbedComposite_x64.inf

 

You can now package this up and deploy with your favorite package deployment tool. Simply running the batch file in the folder will install the drivers to the driver store. Plugging in a micro:bit will install the drivers automagically.

Try as I might I couldn't get the driver to preload on our system even though pnputil or dpinst always said it was successful. Very strange as I do use these types of methods for the Nvidia driver etc. The only way I could ever get it to run was to use the setup exe.

I've created an MSI that pre-installs the driver if you want to give it a try? I'll post the link in a bit if interested.

 

I haven't completely finished testing it, but it appears to work fine on the computers I have tried so far.

I wouldn't mind testing that out too if you don't mind :) (Anything that makes my deployments tidier is a blessing!)

Thanks, I think after spending ages this morning trailing around plugging Micro Bits in just to let the driver install, this would be a life saver.

Here's a 32-bit MSI...

 

32-bit: mbed Drivers v1.73.0 (x86).msi

 

I do not currently have access to a 32-bit Windows PC or VM to test it so if there are any issues please let me know. :)

Sorry to re-awaken this thread, but do you please still have a copy of this file? I've tried building my own and it's not working. The dropbox link is 404.
