RIS GUID Problems

Well its not RIS its a batch of client PC's that are all showing the same GUID (FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF0620) which is causing me megga problems with RIS as all 30 of the machines want to be called the same host name! I have tried adding the BannedGuids line to the registry on the RIS box but this has no effect what so ever!

Any ideas? PC's are crappy old Celeron 1.7GHz with onboard LAN (realtek RTL8139), have also tried 3Com PCI cards but the GUID is still the same?

Maybe a BIOS update may sort ti but I wouldnt hold my breath.

You need to get a utility from the supplier which will rewrite the UUID in the BIOS. I've had this from time to time and the supplier has usually known what to do. What make are these PCs?

They are from a local firm, as already mentioned they are about 4 years old these are machines from before my time as i only buy Dell now unless I can get somit from the motherboard manufacturer I'm probably snookered - yet another reason not to buy from Joe Bloggs!

@paul - Sorry, I should have read the original post more closely. As you have found out, the UUID is not part of the network interface, but encoded on the motherboard itself.

 

One other possibility might be to install the PCs one at a time as follows;

 

- Install the first PC

 

- In AD Users & Computers (or ADSIEDIT if absolutely necessary), remove the UUID entry (it's NetbootGUID in ADSIEDIT). This effectively makes the PC a non-managed PC, but once it's built then that doesn't matter.

 

Im guessing that you would need to wait for the build to complete as the

computer account is created during the non-GUI section of the install. You could kick of one install, wipe out the UUID in AD then kick off the next one.

 

Might be worth a try...

When you tried the 'banned GUIDs' fix, did you reorder the GUID as per this MS KB article?

When this happened to me i just tell it to do a custom install and specify its name manualy in the RIS bootup on the rig and it just says you will have issues if using the GUIDs to mange them which i just hit return and off it goes. You have to modify your RIS boxes settings in the Default Domain Policy to allow you to run a custom setup. It makes putting new rooms in a since as you tell it custom setup, name them and off you go for life.

Surely that will give each pc the same computer account? If not please let me know as I have 400 ergo laptops to RIS & I don't fancy building them all by hand!!

I have had this exact same problem. I have a disk that you put in the machine and it restes the guid to the date and time you do it to the second so no two machines can be the same. You just boot the floppy type one line of code and bam done.

Dan, if it's legal to do so, it'd surely be useful to have something available for download on here... I just know this is going to crop up at some point.

Yeh good point. Below is what you need to do to get it to work.

 

1. Find a floppy disk!

2. Reformat it as a MSDOS startup disk

3. Copy the files in the ZIP file attached onto the disk

4. Boot from the floppy

5. It should give a screen that looks similar to CMD, i.e. a:\

6. Type UUID /u and press return

7. It will then give it its new GUID once it has completed its proccess it will return to the screen in number 5.

8. Reboot machine and RIS.

I had originally looked for something like this, but have been told by Asustek (Ergo re-badge their laptops) that the UUID is read-only on this model!! So, I'll let you know if I have any success...

No probs just hope it works!

 

It has saved me a few times none more so than recently when we had 65 new machines delivered all with the same GUID!

It failed, read-only... Thank you for your efforts though. I guess I have a lot of accounts to pre-stage and edit!!

 

FYI the Ergo model is Ergo Ensis L4000L, watch out for these in future!!

Thats a pain in the a$$. Surely that is shoddy building of the machines by them? Is there no way that you can flash bios or similar to remove the read-only? Could you not send the laptops back and get different machines? ones that are not read-only!

We have 400 of the laptops some of wich are 3 years old. I am trying to get some answers out of Asustek, but they are not being very helpful tbh. The BIOS is/was flashable, but they have stated there is now way to change this setting . I have tried a couple of BIOS editors anyway, to no avail.

With the number of integrated network cards these days I don't see the point in using the guid, I'll stick with my easy to obtain and unique mac addresses instead

How are you using it? I'm just curious as I never bothered once I found WDS can use the mac instead. The mac is a unique value still, or does the guid contain more information than a unique value?

To be honest I haven't had the time to figure it out but the GUID seemed to be vital even though the MAC addresses are different... Because the silly sods at Stone have put in a GUID of 101010101010110...etc... it doesn't default to the MAC.

 

The other thing is that I'm using RIS still (because it works!) so WDS may well be different..
