SimpleSi Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) Following on from http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/69648-app-edugeeks.html I've knocked up a basic app to scan in barcodes of equipment. The app requires that the Barcode Scanner app by the Zxing team (its on the market) is installed as my app just calls its scanning routines and gets the value returned. This version is just to see if it installs and works on other phones.SimpleScan.zip Instructions Download and install it using a file manager type app. Its called SimpleScan When you run it, press the Scan Serial Num button, scan a barcode and then enter rest of information (all optional) and press Save (successful save will create a text file in /sdcard/simplescan and clear the fields) Any feedback greatfully received (what device info needed) If it works, then we can go onto what data fields we really need and functionality! regards Simon PS For a fully grown up app - check out Memento - very polished - hopefully mine will have the advantage of integrating into a free stock database/SIMS/CMIS Edited April 21, 2011 by ZeroHour 3
RichCowell Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) Checking this out now, love testing anything new on Androids! Edited January 31, 2011 by RichCowell
gtg93 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) Good idea... Works fine for me - LG Optimus GT540 An idea though... Is it possible to output all info into one file (maybe xls or xml...)? That would be really useful for when recording old stock. Edited January 31, 2011 by gtg93
RichCowell Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Works for me... It would be good if, as well as being able to enter the manufacturer manually, we could click a button for a list of pre-defined manufacturers, so we'd only need to enter them for obscure things... HTC Desire (Android 2.2)
gumbygaz Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Works on my HTC Desire (Leedroid 2.3d ROM) - Scanned & created txt file no probs. Would be a cracking little app!
Irazmus Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) No problems on the Samsung Galaxy S (Android 2.1) and Tab (Android 2.2). I'd like to see integration with GLPI so we can more quickly input equipment (peripherals mainly). Edited January 31, 2011 by Irazmus
Little-Miss Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Ooh looking forward to testing this. You may be a god to me if this works!
Domino Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Looks good so far man. though as we've the same handset and ROM you already know that.....
SimpleSi Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 @all - looking like frist hurdle over - ta I'll move onto getting it to store all the scans in a database with export/import to xml/csv. And drop down manfacturers:) What fields are really needed - obviousy sn, model, manufacturer and free description - what others will prob be needed? regards Simon
SimpleSi Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 though as we've the same handset and ROM you already know that I've got identically cloned computers that can't even run echo "Hello World" consistently Never underestimate gremlins Si

JJonas Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) Works for me HTC Desire (Android 2.2) but we need an app to do something with the text files. also when scanning same item again it makes a new file. would be better if it brought up the record for that item. Edited January 31, 2011 by JJonas
JJonas Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 How about drop downs for OS and architecture (x86/x64). maybe also configurable drop downs for Room/location? How about make it populate new scan with the previous manufacturer/model number? that way when you start scanning a room most of the work is done for you.
RichCowell Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Other fields - Location's already been mentioned, that would be good... Possibly also - age & condition... maybe...
gtg93 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Many people would use this tool for slightly different tasks - so why not make the generic headers (fields) that most of us will use e.g. Serial Number - Make - Model but then add an option to make your own headers (fields)? Then people can add anything they want!!
SimpleSi Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 OK - purely minor cosmetic change only (the buttons are wider) - but its the official version 0.1 SimpleScan_0_1.zip Si Busy evening ahead 1
SimpleSi Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 @john Do you want the good news or the bad news @all V0.2 now stores info in internal database and has a menu option to export the database to xml file in sdcard/simplescan SimpleScan_0_2.zip Source Code now available simplescan - Project Hosting on Google Code regards Simon 1
john Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 @john Do you want the good news or the bad news The good news Is it you bought me a new Windows 7 Phone and are developing it for that? Or is the bad news that WM 6.1 is too new for you and you want me to dig out my old XDA2 from O2?
gtg93 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 @john Do you want the good news or the bad news @all V0.2 now stores info in internal database and has a menu option to export the database to xml file in sdcard/simplescan Source Code now available simplescan - Project Hosting on Google Code regards Simon That's much better just with the export option (LG GT540). Will be a useful app.

No the good news we've decided to treat Windows Mobile with the contempt it so richly deserves The bad news is we have to now hear you moan about it.... 1
JJonas Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Version 0.3 requests update option when installing nice icon
SimpleSi Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 update option when installing What do you mean? Keep existing data? nice icon Anyone fancy doing this - if you create it I'll stick it in @people wanting generic app Memento is a great app to allow full customising of any storage database you want. This app is intended as a straight forward IT equip (computers/projectors/monitors etc) asset logger (well at the moment it is)
john Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 No the good news we've decided to treat Windows Mobile with the contempt it so richly deserves The bad news is we have to now hear you moan about it.... Soo mean to me just because I'm different
JJonas Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 What do you mean? Keep existing data? When I installed the new version I only had options to un-install or run no upgrade option.
