LeMarchand Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 (edited) Bonus Daughter #1 + Baby Daddy share an old car between them and live in an area where it's "search until you find a parking spot". As neither remembers to leave a note or tell the other where the car is parked, this frequently leads to the car having to be searched for the next time it's needed by the other. This can't be a unique problem, but I'm struggling trying to find an app or similar. Nether of them will condone an "always on" type app that the other could "backtrack" on to find the car Neither would remember to manually press an "I've parked" button, so it must be completely automatic Car so old that there's no Bluetooth to act as a trigger Did find the Nonda ZUS, which looked promising - but has anyone used one (or similar) in a "shared" scenario? So, any ideas, peeps? Needs to be cheap and not need any wiring. ATM the best I can think of is a Bluetooth lighter socket device and crafting a "Disconnected? Ping GPS data" type routine but that requires me setting it up on two phones and I can see this being deemed a "privacy intrusion". It's almost as if they don't want each other to know where they are... Edited August 1, 2022 by LeMarchand
Norphy Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Apparently the Google Assistant can do it? https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/7382429?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=0 https://www.xda-developers.com/google-assistant-automatic-parking-location/#:~:text=You%20could%20ask%20Google%20Assistant,stopped%20driving%20and%20started%20walking. I've not got an Android phone so I can't vouch for this.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Baby Daddy, in particular, has location services turned off. P.S. For anyone wanting to find their personal vehicle, I just opened Assistant as asked it where my car was and got a pretty accurate location. Something like Tile? Would need a much longer range than Tile; the car could be streets away.

LeMarchand Posted August 1, 2022 Author Posted August 1, 2022 (edited) Android version of AirTag maybe then? Those even work in North Korea AFAICT AirTag functionality on Android is limited and the equivalents are all Bluetooth. Did just test what the automation app I find easiest (Macrodroid) can do, and it can be set to send a location text on device disconnection and could even have an "only if close to home" location modifier. LOUD Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Leave an old PAYG phone in car and have £20 on sim to keep data topped up. Look for an app that will allow you to share location of Car Phone. As long as phone is in the car and charged then you can locate it.

Doesn't get over the "we don't want each other to be able to track our movements" problem, but probably OK for more trusting car sharers!
jmak Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 I might be being unimaginative, but I can't imagine anyone productising those requirements. Sounds like a tracking device that doesn't track you... If it's automated you can't control when it shares your location. Just my thoughts....

Yeah, shame that 2 people who've decided to spawn together aren't more open with each other . I think my <£10 solution is a pretty good compromise and should work without always sending data, but I suspect that they won't like the idea while they continue to complain about not being able to locate the care in a hurry. With that sort of attitude, I think they should retrain as teachers . 1
mavhc Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 IF power removed from phone because car turned off AND location within area X THEN send SMS to 2 numbers with link to location on Google maps 1
Andrew_C Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 IF power removed from phone because car turned off AND location within area X THEN send SMS to 2 numbers with link to location on Google mapsBut it will also send the location of the side chick/bloke to the 3rd party. Allegedly.
LeMarchand Posted August 2, 2022 Author Posted August 2, 2022 (edited) IF power removed from phone because car turned off AND location within area X THEN send SMS to 2 numbers with link to location on Google maps Yeah, that's what I figured. Did just test what the automation app I find easiest (Macrodroid) can do, and it can be set to send a location text on device disconnection and could even have an "only if close to home" location modifier. Was hoping to find something they could set up themselves, though. I can foresee one party or the other asking for modifications at a later date... But it will also send the location of the side chick/bloke to the 3rd party. Allegedly. That's where the location modifier comes in; it only sends the text if the car is parked within a certain area around the house. Edited August 2, 2022 by LeMarchand
TechMonkey Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 IFTTT trigger? Would both need it on their phones but something like when phone is within 1 mile of home log location. That way their location isn't constantly logged but local is. Would need some playing to get it right I imagine. Cost is free. 2

Hmmm... cuts the need for the Bluetooth device, though might be harder to work out where the car is as they'd be driving at walking speed to try to find a spot! Thry’ll just have to make sure their affairs are conducted out of range Don't poop where you eat, I guess.
