Installing OSX on a virtual machine

Has anyone put yosemite or any other OSX on a windows virtual machine (hyper-v, or VMWare)?

 

I need to run apple configurator without an apple

Unfortunately illegal, unless you're running it on a Mac which no doubt renders the exercise pointless.

Any reason you need Configurator instead of something like Meraki?

I thought it would be useful to update all the ipads at once, then meraki can deploy the apps.

Does meraki do ios updates as well?

It is possible to do, although very naughty and slightly illegal

 

I did try this once before for the same reason, but the iPad doesn't see the VM once it restarts during the install process so doesn't work.

 

Meraki is the next best thing but I don't think it supports updates - Mac Mini might be the way to go if you're wanting to use full configurator (there is a windows version available but it's not very good).

illegal but can be done , if you do it the normal way it's soooo slow but there are pre-configured Vm's out there you can download into hyper-v or ESXi

Think i'll have to just do it manually for now, or carry the case of ipads into the common area where we have an imac for student use.

 

If they buy more ipads i'll have to request a cheap old mac for syncing purposes only.

If you are just planning on using Meraki MDM with no Apple Configurator....BIG problem, why?

 

Any paid for apps that you push to the devices using Meraki (and you need 1 x Apple ID per iPad, otherwise your are heading for trouble) will now be tied to that Apple ID and not owned by the school.

Now i'm officially confused. I haven't followed it yet, but i'm reading through the edugeek idiots guide which suggests we use meraki to deploy the apps:

 

MDM - deploy apps using this. In meraki you can search for apps and deploy them. If they are paid for ones, you need to upload a spreadsheet of app codes. This will then be redeemed one by one. Advantages of using MDM for this is that you can (in Meraki anyways) re-deploy the apps to different iPads. I'm not 100% sure, but if you use apple configurator for this, the app is then tied to that iPad forever.

I tried a few months ago .. what a royal PITA that turned out to be. Basically, it's not worth the hastle of trying to get it to install, IMHO.

I use Configurator and it works fine for me (on an apple). Never tried meraki

If you use Configurator and put the iPad into Supervise Mode, I'll just say that again....use Supervise MODE. Now when you apply an app over USB to the iPad the redemption code you use can be reclaimed back from the iPad. You don't need Apple ID's for the iPads either

 

This means that school purchased content is not being given away and redeem codes are not being given away to Apple ID's.
