One of my schools reported that their website was unavailable this morning (I presume down to parents checking the snow situation). Came back up when school started.

Anyone else with an embc website have this?

Great.

We tell all parents to check the website rather than ring and its not available so the poor secretaries still have to field all the calls.

It did get me thinking I should setup a template html file so can rename ad set as main index page to give a single html page with the info on it.

The most annoying thing is that this is the first time we tried to use the website to inform parents of the snow situation and it failed, now we had calls about the snow and complaints about the website!

I thought ahead and moved the schools website over to CS New media. Since the change over I've never had a problem :D

I am going to be asking LA why at most critical time the webservice was unable to cope..

Russ

Already done, waiting for reply.

More voices would be good though.

Ours went down as well. Ended up creating a single .html file which displayed the school was closed message. Have asked LEA for reason as the Head wants an explanation.

Not had any reported issues round here, but most parents / schools use the council pages on the main council site now ...

Well around here you are advised to check BBC Leicester or Leicester Sound website, but guess what happens to those websites on a snowy day...

Yeah ... that happened to the council site when we had the bad weather in Feb, but they have improved it all now and don't have a problem. A pretty good, load balanced sharepoint front end, with feeds that get pulled of by the local radio stations so that they have quick access to the info for news reports.

Northamptonshire CC even have general news and info going out via twitter now, often with some 'good news' stories or raising awareness of projects.

That's a pretty good idea, would cut out on all the MySQL queries and such that are carried out by lets say a Joomla website.

My tech had brain wave on joomla site we can just set it to close with a message minimum sql queries and means do not need to ftp into embc etc.

Ah, nice one.

Must update the maintenance page now then and get rid of the Joomla logo.

Yeah thats a good idea :)

To a certain extent it would depend on other schools doing the same to reduce the load as well?
