October 2014 Critical Patch Update Released

This Critical Patch Update also provides fixes for 25 new Java SE vulnerabilities. The highest reported CVSS Base Score for these Java SE vulnerabilities is 10.0. This score affects one Java SE vulnerability. Out of these 25 Java vulnerabilities, 20 affect client-only deployments of Java SE (and 2 of these vulnerabilities are browser-specific). 4 vulnerabilities affect client and server deployments of Java SE. One vulnerability affects client and server deployments of JSSE.

 

In today’s Critical Patch Update Advisory, you will see a stronger than previously-used statement about the importance of applying security patches. Even though Oracle has consistently tried to encourage customers to apply Critical Patch Updates on a timely basis and recommended customers remain on actively-supported versions, Oracle continues to receive credible reports of attempts to exploit vulnerabilities for which fixes have been already published by Oracle. In many instances, these fixes were published by Oracle years ago, but their non-application by customers, particularly against Internet-facing systems, results in dangerous exposure for these customers. Tell me if I'm being thick, but if I migrate to Java 8, will I still need 7, or is there backwards compatibility issues etc?

You won't need 7 if you upgrade to 8, but you will have to test the software or websites that you use to see if they have any compatibility issues. Most should be fine.

Is 8 any more stable with regards to ripping old versions out when updating?

It seems half the time half of our installs like to hang with an error msg in the background stopping the uninstallation without user intervention.

Is 8 any more stable with regards to ripping old versions out when updating?

I always uninstall the old version before installing the new (rather than letting the Java installer deal with that) and haven't had any problems so far.

 

It seems that Oracle have finally fixed the issue where running the MSI twice would leave you with a broken install (I did a quick test in a VM just to see).
