OK So we have an old ExGarde installation running on Windows 7. The school has never really had a leavers/starters policy so we now have a massive ExGarde database full with users who no longer work at the school. This is going back at least 7 years. There is currently no link between the ExGarde software and AD, SIMS or any other of the school's systems. When someone new starts we print out their ID card using CardExchange Professional which gets its data from SIMS overnight. Then we have to manually create the new starter in ExGarde and add the card number to that account so the card works. All fine and dandy until the time comes to rationalise 7 years' worth of leavers and their associated cards. At the moment I'm looking at exporting a list of accounts that are valid then comparing that list with the accounts in ExGarde and manually reconciling the lists then deleting the inactive accounts from ExGarde. Scarily dull and wrought with potential for errors. TDSI ExGarde uses a SQL Express database. It has occurred to me that if I can generate a list of valid card holders from SIMS or ID Manager etc then it should be possible to use this as a source of data for a SQL script to remove the defunct accounts from ExGarde without all the manual faff. Only problem is - i have never used SQL for anything. This is an incredibly long shot but is anyone out there able to provide at least a basic outline of how to do what I need to? The first hurdle that I have come across is that we do not have a record of the SQL Admin account or password so we would probably need to get that sorted first..... We don't have direct TDSI support as that goes through the suppliers rather than the users so that is a tricky avenue to approach.

Has anyone successfully managed to do a command line silent install of SQL 2012 Express? Preferably with SSMS etc.. Looking at firing this out to all schools in the county and not getting very far. Currently using either the SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe or SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe and although the wizard mode seems to take less steps than 2008R2 did, the silent command line method is alluding me. I've look at the info given on MSDN Install SQL Server 2012 from the Command Prompt and tried the example with no joy and played around with some variations without success. So, anyone else had any luck? Any ideas more than welcome. oh yeah, I need it to have SSMS that's why I'm using the ADV version

Is the 1GB buffer pool limit imposed by SQL Server Express 2005 on a 'server wide' basis (ie. the limit applies to all instances, so they all share a 1GB buffer pool) or is it per instance (so each instance gets a 1GB buffer pool)? I've yet to find a site with clear advice on this particular issue.

Working with a school to upgrade, cleanup and generally simplify an aging setup. Very small school (20 children, 12 Staff, plus 3 Admin staff who would access SIMS and FMS) Currently a single physical Dell server (approx 7+ years old) is doing pretty much everything: DC, DHCP, DNS, STORAGE, SQL+SIMS, and VPN. I've been in a similar position before and the server setup I put in place has proven good. Already spoken to Dave at ICTDirect and I see an option there for refrub, but I'll give them options of new and custom built along with it. Questions 1. Can SQL Server Express 2016 happily run and serve the above setup (a SIMS and FMS DB) when installed on Windows 10 EDU or LTSB edition?? 2. Is it recommended/preferred to install the other SIMS related stuff (SOLUS 3, System Manager, Document Server) on the same VM as the SQL DB ? 3. With GDPR in mind, does each VM (disk) need to be encrypted, just the SIMS DB vm disk, or none of the above? 4. Is a TPM 2.0 module for the server board compulsory to achieve any necessary encryption? 5. Will a server with an Intel E3-1220 v6 processor be sufficient to handle three VMs for the above mentioned roles? Thank you for your help
