I have BGinfo setup but for some reason it does not apply when a user logs on to a PC/laptop for the first time. The standard Windows wallpaper is shown without any BGinfo data. When the user logs off and back on again the wallpaper and BGinfo data is shown. I have the file BGinfo64.exe, BGinfo.bgi, and the wallpaper JPEG copied to the folder "c:\files" in a seperate computer Group Ploicy which means the files are copied to the C drive before the user has logged on. I then have the following script in a batch file running at user level: reg add HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Sysinternals\BGInfo /v EulaAccepted /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f C:\files\Bginfo64.exe C:\files\SPSBGinfo.bgi /TIMER:00 /nolicprompt Any ideas what's going wrong? The wallpaper and BGinfo data is displayed flawlessly on the second login so I'm not sure what's going on.

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but we'll soon see! Does anyone know of a batch/powershell script to use to set a wallpaper? If so, could you advise? Thanks!

In the past I've created a different background for staff and pupils to easily identify different users when they log on. What I want to do now is get the location for each computer as we have had some jobs which look like the GPO are not applying properly. I was going to do this by creating a new image for each room with the room name embedded in but thought as we are also using BGInfo could we get the OU information through that? I can't see an obvious setting but thought maybe through a WMI filter?

Hi. I am using BGInfo to diplay details about my users. When Students logon I currently have: Username, Station Name, IP Address, Logon Time and Screen Resolution [i have required some or all of these values at least once in the past so now I have them in view all of the time] I have now been asked to display the full name of the Student users [i suppose so that Supply Staff can differentiate James from John when 08SmithJ and 08SmithJT are both logged on in the same computer room] I have this script: which will echo the full name as a string to the screen so I know it works [got it from Edugeek] What I would like it to do now is write the string to a text file [with a nominated file file name in a nominated place: eg: %TEMP%\UserFullName.TXT] so that BGInfo can pick it up and display it along with all of the other information already on screen. Can anyone help with this? I am not very good with coding [as you might have guessed: I just adapt what I see elsewhere but I can't seem to make this work] Thanks.

Hi. Got a confusing one for you now. Trying to setup BGinfo to show the computer name at the logon screen. I'm eventually going to set it up using a logon script, but now I'm just trying to test it out. What happens is: I run BGinfo from the command line using a modification of Michael's script: @ECHO OFF REM * Sets Logon Desktop Background * copy \\server\netlogon\BGINFO\BGINFO.EXE %SYSTEMROOT% /Y %SYSTEMROOT%\bginfo.exe /I"\\server\netlogon\bginfo\computer.bgi" /timer:0 /nolicprompt It runs, generates the bginfo.bmp and sets it as the background, but it is compleatly blank. It only has the green background we set, but no information, not even the static text I entered. I am very puzzelled by this one. Its obviously not a permissions issue, and the script is deffinately running because it creates the file. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, David

Hey, I know this question has been asked before (I'll explain why I ask again below), but has anyone had experience of running BG Info across the LAN, and if so, how did you get around the problem of it needing admin rights to run on client PCs over the network? I'll explain the setup: bginfo and a settings file in a remote share on a server. A GPO then puts a shortcut in StartUp across the network pointing to the share, with options set to run from the settings file and to ignore the splash screen/EULA (etc). Tested on several PCs and this set up runs fine, but only if you are logging in as admin, once you use a normal user account it fails to launch. The reason I'm asking this question again is because the solutions I've seen (here and elsewhere) used a registry trick to get around this problem. I'd really rather avoid going down that route unless absolutely necessary. There is a bunch of stuff I haven't tried (i.e. I know I can push BGinfo and the settings file out using a GPO and run them locally. I'd prefer for them to be centrally managed but that is one solution). It's just that I've just go to the point where I've realised that many people have probably encountered this exact problem and I can probably save some time by just asking. So, anyone got any other solutions? Thanks in advance. p.s. I definitely do not want to store admin credentials anywhere in plain view (I've seen some people use runas, with username and password in plain view or relying on security through obscurity. For quite obvious reasons, that isn't happening).

Morning, Just saw with interest the little application called BGinfo.exe which displays the pertinent information on the desktop relating to network/user/computer info. This would be beneficial for staff when reporting issues. Would it be possible to create a RM Package of this which could be pushed out to all the workstations that has been preconfigured with our chosen data? Regards, AT

Hey guys, I'm trying to set up bginfo for students on our computers. I'd like to display how much free space the studets have in their home directory which is mounted as P. I can't find anything obvious within bginfo to make it display the free space for anything other than C. Has anybody else managed this before who is willing to lend me a hand? Thanks, Ollie

Ok so I'm trying to iron out some problems with our new setup and here is a big fat annoying one for you guys. Background is set by bginfo on logon via group policy. Due to bginfo needing active desktop to be disabled, this means users have access to the 'set as desktop background' option in certain contextual menus such as IE and picture viewer. All the options in group policy to stop students changing the wallpaper only work if active desktop is enabled..which it isn't. So how do I get round this? Ive seen a suggestion elsewhere to use the following script: This however, doesn't work. The only way I can think to solve this is to disable contextual menus on IE but I'd like to avoid this. Any ideas?

Hi Guys, Please find the belwo Bginfo configuration document, Its worked for me for 2 days in all the servers, but its throwing the error : do you want to create bg.bgi. If i click on Yes, it will throws the error: Error loading \\bg\bg.bgi. In all the server its throwing the error. Please provide the correct documentaion on this. BGINFO Documentation: for 2008 server. First download the BGInfo software on desktop & unzip the same. Go to Root drive>Create a folder, name with BG, share the folder BG and give the Permissions to everyone (Read& Write Permissions). Now copy the BgInfo software into the BG Share folder. Open this path: C:\BG\BGInfo server, then run BGinfo,I agree. Once Bginfo opened, Select Fields Choose the settings, go to File, Click on Save As: give the file name as: Bg.Bgi (Save it into Shared Folder BG). Now you can see the BG desktop background. Note: If you Logoff the server, BG Background will disappear. Open a Notepad: give this path \\Hostname of the server pc\BG\BGINFO.EXE \\BGINFO\BG\BG.BGI /TIMER:0 /NOLICPROMPT Save this file as .Bat format into Shared folder BG. Copy the Bginfo.Exe file into shared folder. Just double click on .Bat file, and then BG Desktop Background will appear. If you Logoff the server, BgInfo desktop background will disappear. To overcome this issue need to enable the Policy in Local Group Policy Editor. Run: gpedit.msc>Expand User Configuration>Expand Windows Settings>Open Scripts (Logon/Logoff) Right side, Double click on Logon>Click on add>Browse>select .Bat file, click ok, ok. Run: cmd>Gpupdate, press enter. Logoff the server & Logon the server. Now Desktop Background BG will appear. Note: Whenever you connect a pc in RDP: go to Run: Mstsc>choose Options>Experience tab>Select the box for Desktop Background. (Then the Hosted pcs Desktop Background will appear in Rdp pc)

Hey all, I'm trying to get BGInfo to run at Computer startup, running from a network share, deployed via GPO. I only want it running on a certain group of machines - hence Computer Startup. Can't seem to get it running. Any suggestions to where I'm going wrong. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- BGInfo.bat CALL “\\sv-01\networkapps$\BGInfo\BGInfo.exe” “\\sv-01\networkapps$\BGInfo\HostNameOnly.bgi” /timer:0 /nolicprompt" --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Works when I run it from my desktop but not on startup. Only other way I can think of getting it running is by using loopback on the GPO but thats a bit of a faff. It must be something to do with setting the wallpaper for the user. Cheers in advance

Hi everyone, Been using bginfo very happily for the last two years on 2003/xp- it's been such a time saver particually for staff/students reporting problems. I'm testing bginfo on Windows 7 but so far I can only get it to work for users but not for the computer logon screen. Has anyone found a way around this?? I'm assuming it's because of permissions. I'm using a vbs with the following command; Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") objShell.Run "\\dc1\Utility\BgInfo\BGinfo.exe \\dc1\Utility\BgInfo\test1.bgi /accepteula /timer:0", 1, True Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Joe
