We have written into our school policy that the school accepts no liability for the use of any IT at home or any additional costs that may occur if they use school equipment at home. We have had one or two staff complain about DA dropping out who are on Sky. The most stable seems to be BT, no changes required but the speed can fluctuate wildly.

Staff can invoke an 'unfiltered' policy for themselves but they haven't had to. All traffic goes through the same proxy server.

Hi Michael, we use roaming profiles at the school which work well for us. Yes we have deployed the latest version of Flash from Adobe's download site. I've even printed of the Teachers and Students GPOs and gone through them line at a time and I can't see what would setting is making the difference. Any help greatly appreciated.

When a student browsers to some Flash websites (World Maths Day - http://www.worldmathsday.com - World Education Games for example) the site checks if the computer has the latest version of Flash and if not refuses to load. If an admin logs on and visits the site then there is no problem. I can replicate the problem by removing the site (or all domains) from the Shockwave ActiveX Control. I have tried adding a registry key Current User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>EXT>STATS>{CLID}>IEXPLORE\DOMAINS\* {CLID} is the version of Flash we are using. But still not joy. Does anyone know of a way to add which websites they would allow Flash to have full reign on. The sites are in my Trusted Zone. Any help would be greatly recieved. Cheers,

Hi Mat, I was at a presentation from Brune Park Community College in Gosport last week on how they are have deployed Netbooks to their yr10 & yr11. Nearly 650 pupils in total. This is in addition to the standard trolley suites and staff laptops. The college is using MERU for the wireless and Lenevo Netbooks. The Parents are buying the Netbooks from the school at a heavily subsidised rate but the Netbook remains the property of the school until they leave. Talk to their Assistant Principle Liam Stapleton about the how they have implemented and paid for it or Julie Denby their IT Team Leader on how it technicaly works. They seems to have less drop-outs than us (We've been Cisco for about 5 years) and everyone connects at a faster rate than a normal micro-cell infrastructure. Martin

Absolutely, To rule out any single point of failure you should use two switches to connect your servers and MD together and another switch for network. Connect the iSCSI Controllers from the back of the MD box to the different switches. Now connect the the servers to the switches (iSCSI initiator). You should have two paths per server to the different controllers on the MD box. Make sure you load the MPIO driver and have the latest NIC driver from Intel. Now if one of your switches die the network wont. Dell's 5424 switches are iSCSI certified and can be picked up new but open for less than three hundred per switch. Don't forget to look at Jumbo Frames and off-loading on your whole set-up. If you have this misconfigured your physical hosts wont be able to see your virtual disk mappings. Spend some pennies on System Centre Virtual Machine Manager, a great bit of kit for only having to look in one place to see what is happening.

I've already tried both of those but to no avail. It now looks like with the exception of my Exchange server all of my Win 2008 and Vista machines broadcast on the network immediatley. My next step will be to 'pull' buildings off the network to see if a machine in an adjacent building is telling these machines to broadcast. SpyBot S&D and NOD32 both come back negative. Any other ideas? Martin

Hi Folks, I have a Windows Server 2008 box that on Wednesday starting firing out LLMNR packets on port 5355. At it's peak it was firing 29,000 a second. Which crippled our network and some of the sourounding schools lost the internet. I have disable IPv6 on the NIC and have used group policy and a registry hack to disable LLMNR traffic but I still have the storm occuring. NOD 32 show nothing and Search and Destroy comes back clean. I don't want to rebuild this server as it it one of our application servers. I could use a backup but I'm afraid that without knowing the cause or cure it might occur again. Any ideas?

We use Cisco here. 1100 and 1200 series with A and G. A root bridge connecting to two non-roots. All controlled by a Wireless Lan Solution Engine Express. One of the access points is set as a WDS and we use Certificates for authentication. Very quick, scalable and cheaper than you might think. We tested Netgear, 3Com and Cisco and found that even though we were paying more for Cisco the throughput and range on the Cisco kit outweighed the cost.

I've just been given a little extra cash:D, £1500 which I was going to spend on Ranger Outpost but they can't guarentee that it would/will work with Win2008 so i didn't bother. However, it turns out I had ring fenced the money and it's still there. Our budget was frozen on the 5th so this is a bit of a Brucee bonus. So I have £1500 and two days, what are your recommendations. I have print management but not remote admin, we've budgeted for NetOP or equivalent next FY. Wireless is fine and so are my switches. I wouldn't get away with a plasma screen:( and I have Digital Signage. Thanks in advance, Martin

ICT what school are you from?

I use a Cisco 1300 Bridge with an omnidirectionanl antenna as a Root Bridge and have 2 Non Root Bridges with Wireless Clients, 1 in a Portcabin (100m with standard indoor arials) and the Sports Hall (200m Directional 8.5 gain antenna) I had some cheap stuff on trial but as soon as we loaded the APs up the performance dived. Some places do great Edu discounts on Cisco stuff so it might be cheaper than you think.

We've had no problems with it and it's been in for about 9 months. I think the one-way voice can be solved with a setting on the access points but haven't found it yet. I would recommend the phones, a doddle to use, setup and pretty cheap as well. The four secondary schools in our area all use the Tosh fitted by the same company and no complaints from anyone. Hi, I have a couple of remote buildings connected using a 1300 series Cisco Bridge (Root) and 1230 Cisco AP (Non Root). The Bridge is connected back to a Cisco 3560 PoE switch the same as our PBX a Toshiba Strata system. When ever I connect a VOIP phone to the access point I can only get voice one way, I can hear people I call in the main building but they can not hear me. If I plug the same phone directly into the switch I get two-way voice once I have enabled the correct smart port. I have enabled QoS on both the AP and Bridge for voice and still only one way changing the Bridge port settings to phone on the swicth makes no difference. Any thoughts anyone.

Hi All, I'm moving the school across to Windws 2008 and have money ringfenced for Outpost. I have spoken to Ranger who said that they cannot see why it wouldn't work on WS2008 but haven't tested it but if I bought it and it didn't work, TOUGH! The question is: Have any of you used Ranger Outpost with Windows Server 2008 and ISA 2006? What problems have you encounted and with hindsight would you do it again? Have any of you used a 'Vanilla' approach with WS 2008 I can see threads for 2003 but not 2008 (Maybe it's my eyes). Many thanks,

Hi, We have a Toshiba Strata system. The only thing I can fault on it so far is the quality and volume of the internal calls is so good it feels like people are shouting. 1. The initial cost wasn't as much as we thought and the yearly maintainance cost is very little £200 I think(The bursar isn't here so I can't confirm). This includes unlimited service calls (Only had to make two, our fault not the phones) and they've come out and done two training days as well. 2.They set most of it up, as we use exsisting phone lines as well as VOIP. We laid new CAT5 where needed and in rooms that weren't ready the company set the VOIP phone up and left it with us, if we've moved a phone changing the settings on the phone is a breeze. 3. Toshiba, Strata IP phones :I[T 2010 Digital Phone: FDKT351F not sure about reception, they look like the digital phone with a block added on. 4.Not yet, installing Ex2007 at the minute, when that's up and running will look into it but SLT don't wan't it I doubt I'll install it. 5. Approx £5000 for system 44 phones mix of digital and ip and (32 Digital - 12 IP) new ISDN lines There is a monthly running cost on the block of number we rent. 6. More reliable than the staff. A couple of the VOIP handsets would only connect one way, there was a setting on the POE switch that sorted that out. No problems connecting the VOIP into the network and a PC into the phone so we only use one port. 7. ISDN purchase and installation cost not sure how much. ISDN line rental. Rental on Blocks of numbers. A small Service agreement cost. 8. 3 x ISDN2e provide us with 6 voice lines and an analogue fax line. BT Sorted the lines in to the school, the company rewired the extensions and laid a couple of new lines were the quality down the line was poor. We have 30 DDIs (Direct Dial In) but internal extenions. We have phones in science prep rooms which you can't dial directly to from the outside but they can dial out. We have a couple of lines in for sports fixtures and trips so staff on the trips can ring in and leave an ETA. That way parents can phone the line and find out if they need to be in early or can have an extra two hours in bed because the ferrys delayed. Will work over a wireless bridge and we have access codes on some 'open' phones so the students can't use them. If you wanted you could give all of your staff a code to track calls.

Can you logon using telnet and the ip address? If not set it back to F.Defaults - Switch the unit off and keeping your finger on the mode button switch it back on. When all of the lights come on and change colour remove your finger. It should take about two minutes to come back again. I might be inclined to remove it from the network until it has rebooted and use the ip address 10.0.0.1

Didn't know they now looked for a DHCP address on startup. You can use a Ciscco utility called IPSU which if you put in the mac address will find the ip address. Once in (Default u/p Cisco and Cisco) you can use the Express Security Setup to set a simple WEP key. Then use the Encryption Section on the Security to increase the encrytion to WPA or WEP (With CCK and MIC). If you have a Radius server you can setup PEAP.
