Loreto Sixth Form College are seeking a motivated and passionate IT professional to join our Cross-College IT department as a Junior Infrastructure Engineer. You will collaborate with our IT and software development teams to deliver improvements to our IT infrastructure through project work across our on-premises and public cloud (Azure and AWS) environments whilst receiving on-the-job training. Key responsibilities include driving cloud adoption, automating processes (PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, Git, GitLab CI/CD), architecting and managing robust and secure systems, supporting containerised application deployments, managing SaaS cloud services including Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Intune, providing internal environment support to our IT and software development teams, contributing to the upkeep of comprehensive infrastructure documentation, and working alongside the IT support team to bring escalated end-user support tickets to a prompt and effective resolution. You will deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, endpoints, and applications running on both Linux and Windows as well as physical infrastructure including servers, switches, firewalls, web filters, and wireless APs. Some of these applications are developed in-house by the software development team. The ideal candidate is self-motivating, with a strong technical foundation. You’ll be working in a dynamic team where continuous learning is essential, and we seek an individual who can thrive in this environment, demonstrating problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to challenges. You will expand your skill set across our diverse and growing technology stack with guidance from our Lead Infrastructure & DevOps Engineer and the wider IT teams. Thank you everyone for your feedback, it's really good to hear from fellow colleagues in the field. For the last couple of users I've been running the generated usernames through a profanity filter before distributing them! We've got 3.5k students and this is expanding soon to around 3.7k I believe, so collisions are likely. I like the idea of decoupling the username from the user's actual name because: - Data protection is no longer a concern if usernames don't resemble personal information. - Forces users to search the directory instead of wrongly guessing a username. - Avoids collisions. - More secure, people can't guess usernames/passwords as easily. You've all given me some more info to allow us to decide if we'd like to change our convention or keep it as-is. Thank you again Best, Edan

Can't you revoke the OneDrive app portion of the user's license or place the users in a dynamic license assignment group that assigns your license without the OneDrive app? You could also look into the registry key DisableFileSyncNGSC but I believe that's Local Machine only so probably not very helpful to you.

Hi everyone, We're kicking off a project to review our IT naming conventions, so I wanted to find out what convention other institutions use for their student's AD usernames. Currently we use the format: [First three letters of first name][First three letters of surname][Year of entry (YY)]. For example, John Smith enrolled in 2023 so his username is JohSmi23. If we also have a student "Johnny Smidt" enrolling in 2023, his username would then be JohSmi231. We've been using this format for quite a few years but due to the way we're joining the names together we're sometimes ending up with usernames that we're having to change. Imagine, for example, Fatima Cowell. I know some institutions use their unique student IDs for student logon names but ours are 12 characters long so I don't want to use that. Thanks for the reply. I can confirm that there are suspicious logins in the Azure sign-in logs. See below. I've redacted a legitimate sign-in as well as the student's username. All these IPs are leased by Three for mobile broadband. The spam e-mails also come from IPs leased by Three in a similar (massive) range. I'd love it if we could enable MFA for all students but unfortunately we can't. Thank you.

Hi all, This has been confusing my team and I for a while now and I'm desperate to get to the bottom of it. We've been receiving a lot of spam. All emails appear to be sent from staff and student e-mail addresses within our organisation. Message Trace confirms this. When logging into an account that spam has been sent from, it is in the deleted items folder (rather than the sent items folder). All of these messages, according to Message Trace, originate from IP addresses leased from RIPE by Three (as in the mobile provider) for its mobile broadband service. Every single message looks like this, and makes reference to Chef Ramsay! It has a "View Article" link and the destination changes with every single e-mail that is sent. I have tried to see where this link sends you as a user to confirm whether it is a phish or just spam, but when clicking the link (in a secure Linux virtual environment with no network access to anything sensitive) the page load times out and nothing happens. Even if I intercept an e-mail like this right away the link in it appears dead. I am a little lost and don't understand what the spammers are achieving if it's nothing but dead links. But it seems somehow they are gaining access to our users' accounts. Is anyone else currently dealing with anything similar? I've written some Exchange rules that are blocking this for now, but I don't know how long it is until the spammers realise nothing is getting through and alter their attack vector. Best wishes!
